So, the last 9 months, I've had a side project going on, to lose weight.

Before this, I've been in the obesity category, for about 2.5 years, and sub obese for 1.5 years.

I quit smoking instantly, with no looking back. With weight loss, I found this approach problematic, and felt inclined, if I should be any serious about it, to know what I was doing. So I snatched knowledge on the go, completed a course on nutrition, and gradually started to develop better habits.

I'm now getting within close range of the "ideal weight", and because this was done in a mindful way, that is, resolving the ignorance leading to the condition in the first place, the overweight will never come back.

It is a difference from understanding and knowing, and most of all, notice the gradual, but very pleasing change. It seemed like a hard goal, but the worst part was the mental projection of the project.

I would really recommend for anyone, and especially to not make the usual quick fix mistake. Feedback?

I have the opposite problem, I need to gain weight. I've always been too thin, but it's my metabolism. I have tried diets, but as soon as I get off of them I loose the weight as fast, or faster than I gained it. So....I decided that my body knows how heavy I was designed to be, so I'll stick with that.
Congrats on the cold turkey cigarette stopping, I did the same thing. cheers

I haven't tried the Atkins, because I've heard it skip carbohydrates. I have not checked it out, but no carbo means incomplete fat burn, as well as creating higher level of acid in parts of the system. I think it got its solution, but my goal is to eat totally natural, pre-fanatic stage.

I found out, while losing, that if I miss a component or not is not the question. The question became - where are the sources :) That said, I don't really miss bread, pasta or rise either - a advanced vegetable sandwhich is still good though grin

I also found, that being a little bit determined, which by no taste-bud-means are negative, it is getting more fun to actually prepare something :)

Being aware of weight is a normal beginner thing :p there are several factors, and I think some contemplation about them is a good thing, until it gets worked into place :) Besides, I found that learning what I was doing made the process much more interesting, now it just looks like a successful investment.

I gained a lot of weight after my car accident as I couldn't walk. I had back, neck, and knee problems. Dieting did not help much. I found this site called Everyday Health. I monitored my eating habits and recorded all physical activity. I stopped frying food, stayed away from fast foods, did not put any breading on my food, and adopted an Asian way of eating which incidentially lowers heart problems for women in menopause. I excercised by walking and cycling and bought myself a total gymn. Once my body was strenthened; I started doing some weight training. The weight training increased my metabolism and combined with eating healthier, I lost 40 pounds within 8 months. I also kick box as well. I have a mini gymn set up in my basement so every day at 5:30; I am working out with the odd day off to rest. I have chronic pain in my knees but its so minor it doesn't bother me. My back is good; just sore when I shovel snow. My neck was good but due to a person hitting me from behind; I do have chronic pain but again its minor.I don't eat much junk food as I don't care for it but will indulge in the odd piece of chocolate or a handful of chips. My weight has gone up but I am losing inches. Dropped 4 sizes. I have kept the weight off for almost 5 years.

I have to loose this unwanted pounds in me too. I weigh more than the normal for my height. Come New Year i started a diet recommended by a dietitian friend of mine. She advise me to lessen my rice (i just love rice, my staple food), sugar, salty and fatty foods. Not too much on the frying, more on steaming and grilling. Vegetables and fruits. Also done walking every late afternoon. I had lose some pounds but I need to loose more. Doing my best.

Well done handshake

I also had a stimulant to do what I'm doing, but it was more at a intellectual level than a actual injury/ illness.

Martial arts are great exercise. I used to do Tae Kwon Do (never achieved something), which is a beautiful martial art. I just came home from the gym actually, my exercise partner has a history of national competition in Kick-Boxing, and we're planning to make one of the days sparring, practicing techniques, did a little bit today, and I just have to admit I have forgotten how awesome it is. I want a martial art for lifelong practice, and so far Aikido is my favorite, so I plan to pick it up this summer after I've gotten my body strengthened and stretched a little bit better. Kick boxing becomes a little bit to much street fight -alike to me, but I can see where how it would be useful, so I keep my eye out for Muay Thai. Just the low kicks, elbow and knees just looks brutal, and extremely effective.

Sounds like a good advice. Just keep in mind that nutrients like fat is needed, like with for example carbohydrates, the source and amount is what makes problems, not the fat in itself.

I would recommend to eventually exchange walking for a activity that raises the heartbeat and breath a little bit more - I started with walks, and I was lucky because I lived in Athens at that time and could wander around at Acropolis, exploring the ruins of Delfi, and similar places, but as I got in a little bit better shape, I wanted something more effective.
