Ok, based on a discussion from a previous thread we have decided that people do not give to the needy on a regular basis....mostly only during the Holidays. So here is the Challange...
Not on a Holiday make a point to give to an organization that helps needy people on a regular basis!
Maybe its once a month you donate to the local food pantry or Salvation Army.
Or Once a month you give $5.00 to a homeless shelter.
Just something regular......even if its once a year!!
Who is willing to say..."I'll do it" and actually follow through...??

I already donate material things year round...last week, I donated my brand new weddings dress with the tags still on it....a lady has a shop that helps brides buy wedding gowns at a lower cost.
For the bulk of my working life I gave to the United Way consistently via a payroll deduction plan that I signed up for. The plan was based on a percentage so the more I made the more I gave. I also chose an abnormaly high percentage since I was single and didn't really need the kind of money that I was making. Money was never my incentive to go to work anyway. I LOVED what I did.
I must confess that now that I'm retired on an extremely low income my incentive to give has diminished. According to statistic I am currently well below poverty-level income so theoretically I should be the recipient of such donations now.
I did just give to NPR lately though. Does that count?
I'm also thinking about going to a homeless shelter and bringing home a woman to love and cherish for the rest of my life. That should end up costing me more than I can seriously afford to be donating.
They are having a texas holdem' tounament and an auction for a lady in town next weekend and I donated four of my photo's, matted and framed for the auction. Things like this happen a lot in our small town. Everyone helps their neighbor.
I do the United Way donation as well through my work payroll deduct. I give endlessly to the red buckets at christmas. I work in healthcare so i make a decent dollar, so i give whenever i hear there is a need. I do donate things often to the SA. I also belong the the Freecycle network, so there is always exchanges going on there.
The one thing i really would like to do, but haven't been able to yet because of my work schedule is to volunteer on a Habitat for Humanity build. Especially now that we are heading into winter, i am sure they can use an extra hand to hurry things along.
i give my sons older clothes to the Good Will or Salavation Army and now that i ma getting ready to move some things that i am not bringing i have given
i give on a regular basis and i also shop at those places
i also give to charity shops & shop there. im horrible w/money -- never know where it all goes to. however, im a counsellor & donate time to counselling people who can't afford to go. so yes, i'll commit to doing that for the next year.
I tried to volunteer at a couple of places and was rejected. That was the last thing on my mind when I went to volunteer. If you ever want to really feel rejected go apply as a volunteer to work for free and get rejected. That’s like the epitome of rejection!
My boys and I donate all of our clothes that are either too small or we don't wear anymore to a place called The Caring Center where I live. It's like the Salvation Army almost.
last week i was invited to speak at a ceremony (which was yesterday), and many of the speakers were from different community based and internationally involved charities...like mine, the theme we were asked to speak about, was "What is your dream for Humanity".
i deliberated about this all week.... i have so many dreams.....
i contemplated and pondered and whittled my dreams to a core...(sort of lowest common denominator in them all)....and i dreamed all the dreams of my ancestors, and all the mothers sat in front of me and gave me their visions,
a child came and sat in my arms as we watched the visions of the first stirrings of creation within the abundance of the exploding cosmos and all of it's unfolding, what is profoundly evident is the abundance, no room here for fear of not having enough
and my dream is we are this abundance and there is certainly always enough for everyone to live fruitful and peaceful lives in harmony with the environment with respect for this divine playground we've been so fortunate to evolve with... and that this nightmare will pass as warning of what we are really capable of ... we will wake up!!!!
and so my message was in essence....................give
of your self, honestly, first to your self. what makes you happiest? often giving for absolutely no reason other than you can, whatever it may be a smile, your time, your opinion, your guidance, a hand a call, a funny... or donating money /services/ contributing...it just does feel good the opportunity to give unconditionally is a gift itself
The Salvation Army is a great organization. There are many good ones out there. Giving blood has been called giving the gift of life. Being an organ donor is good, too. My dad donated his body for science. Through organ donation parts of you will live on after you are gone. The library takes books and it helps others. I think time is the most precious gift one can give, sometimes. I saw this belt made from pop caps at the nursing home two weeks ago. In the winter old coats, blankets and clothes are really good in the rural areas to give. Toys For Tots is a great one, too. Hell, if you are really poor give a smile. You might get one back.

Thanks everyone.....There are numerous ways to give....time, money, energy, that no matter what your financial situation is, there is a place for you to help! I hope everyone enjoys the thread and keeps it positive.....
I give through the hospital I work for they just deduct it from your pay. We also have a few food drives a year. I like to give my sons toys and clothes he's outgrown to Goodwill.
Every Saturday morning there is someone soliciting donations for the homeless out front at the grocery store. The $$$ varies, but something always gets put in. It is a gentle reminder after I am buying a week's worth of groceries, and heading back to the roof over my head, that I should be grateful for what I have.
Being an electrician I have wired 4 houses for Habitate for Humanity, I also donate to the American Diebetes Association whenever possible to help research for a cure for juvenile diebetes
