I've always wished I'd smoked dope (which was available in VN)rather than using the drink, you could buy a 40 oz bottle Bourbon (or any other that took you fancy for $1.52 in the American PX.
After VN I nearly went to Rhodesia, was accepted as a Sargent however on his death bed, (night he died) my father got me to promise i wouldn't go, i'd been accepted however in hindsight i see i only missed been on the loosing side of another silly war trying to contain communist, now here the communist run the bloody government...

Many many of us enjoy a drink or 3. The ones who become aggressive when drinking are really only aggressive people, they just use the excuse of 'alcohol made me do it.'

On the odd occasion I have had too much to drink, I usually just want to find a quiet place to put my head down and go to sleep.

Although on a trip recently, I was camped out at Silverton, NSW when a caravan convoy cranked up the music at 11.30pm. I was very passive after a longish afternoon of companionable drinking and gently removed the keys from the offending vehicle and tossed them away into a cleared area where they could find them in the daylight.

3 not so sober people (okay, I exagerate, it was one very intoxicated woman and her husband) who strongly objected. He because he had left his spare key at home but she because why should she miss out on music just because everyone else wanted to sleep. She wanted a fight and threw her glass of ?? and coke over me (gawd I hate coke). Her husband didn't want a fight .. even with 5 'friends' backing him up he knew the music was a bit over the top. A 6 yo kid found the keys and it diffused.

My mates insisted we leave the area and so we camped a bit out of town. Next day, we learnt that we had been silently cheered by all the other campers who finally got a good nights sleep because it was no more music.

Alcohol is no excuse for behaviour unless it is passive.
