I think it's almost imperative that people are opinionated around me....I couldn't stand to be in company with people that just go with the flow and are afraid to voice their own opinion (and argue their point)....provided they know what they're talking about

I'm not afraid. In most cases I just can't be bothered. I find people don't want to listen anyway so why should I get my knickers in a twist about it. Fortunately, I know when I'm right and I don't need everyone agreeing with me to feel good about myself. I prefer not to cause aggro just to prove a point.

There are far too many people who when asking you for your opinion, don't really want your opinion at all, they just want you to repeat their opinion back to them, they can't deal with the notion that someone else could possibly have a different point of view.
Such people don't listen too anyone else, and woe betide if you offer a different opinion, then they just get abusive and nasty.
It is probably down to a huge and very fragile ego.
