Conrad73: well,FORD made it! Without Bailouts, and it isn't too bad off!
There is an explanation why Ford felt it could weather the financial credit storm and the reason had to do with timing (some would say even luck) Conrad, I’ll give you the pleasure of finishing the rest of the story since your so well informed. Unless of course it wouldn’t serve your ideological agenda in the same way as simply stating Ford didn’t take the bailout.
WhatUwish4: I was talking to a high-level executive from one of the big three car companies recently. By the way - he voted for Obama. I asked him what single thing he considered to be the biggest cause of their problems and it was simply this: "People stopped buying cars."
Well duh... I suppose if I had a business that suddenly lost a ton of sales I would be in trouble, too. What happened is that Obama came forth in his quest for additional "stimulus" dollars and painted a picture so bleak that people began to sit on their cash rather than spend it.
Moreover, government bailouts weren't the answer. Its interesting that when it took over GM it layed off or cut the pensions of all sorts of non-union workers but you didn't hear much about it in the media. In one sense, the government did much like Bain capital would do if it took over a failing company - but you don't hear much about that in the media either.Hiya, Harry!
You talked with an executive. So what. I lived through the panic just as you did. Why must you validate your opinion with association, then BLAME Obama for scare tactics? Your attempt to trivialize that moment in our history I’m sorry to say is laughable. Job loses were in the 100’s of thousands monthly and people were concerned. The car business was in need of restructuring had there been a panic or not. If I remember correctly the direct cost to each auto do to the workers benefit package was something like $1500. They were no longer able to compete. Obama was not the reason as you want to believe and just like the rest of the mess it goes back. I’m surprised that you fail to recognize the complexity of the matter.
You know what amazes me? I don’t even really like the guy but I find myself defending him because it’s the right thing to do.
WhatUwish4: I have never claimed, nor would I even want to try to outline all the problems that have led to our current situation since they are many. I do agree that past administrative policy from both sides have contributed. I was simply responding to one post from someone who was doing that.
It is sickening how many ignorants believe "it's all Bush's fault and you don't like Obama because he is black," over and over and over again as if it is the liberal mantra they recite daily with their Koolaide. Talk about avoidance and cherry picking!!!
The problems started long before Before Bush and have nothing to do with skin color. Considering your premise here, you should agree.
Did you even read the title of this thread? It's all about Obama's origins and roots and nothing else. The economics issue was thrown in a very poor attempt to cover up a bad motive with a good one. Word to the wise....if you want to hide a lie, bury it in the truth, not an easily corrected different lie.
Secondly, the OP has a way of turning every thread against Obama....Now please, I have an open mind...you tell me what's going on there.

If you want to engage in debate, I'm happy to do so. But you're going to have to quit putting words in my mouth and hurling insults. There are plenty of real facts and opinions to discuss without dragging the discussion into the mud.

If its all the same to you Whatu4 I would rather have someones account of something even relayed than the truth according to saint U-Tube . If you ever run into that exec again ask him if he knows the lady who ran Ford commercial sales in Thailand upto or around 98-99 .

It was just a story that I found interesting because of the unexpected answer he gave me. I would have thought the problem was due more to union labor costs or mayby losses to their retirement funds, government regulations, or whatever. I am in frequent contact with the person so I'll be happy to ask about the Ford thing. Can you tell me more specifically what you mean though? I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about.

P.S. I'm not sure what you mean about telling you what's going on there. Can you be more specific?

Just showed once again that Government FIAT doesn't work!
My cousin Pam was running Ford commercial sales in Thailand , she left there 98-99 as the sales slumped . She had remarried to an Aussie guy who's surname I have forgotten while living and working for Ford . They are both now in Aussie .Your Exec may know her new surname .

Wouldn't it be easier to ask your cousin what her last name is? And while you're at it, ask HER what she thinks of this particular episode in history. What does she think caused the slump?
