Strong negative emotions can damage the immune system.

It wasn’t long ago that it was thought that emotions had no effect on the immune system. Perhaps you’ve seen the commercials that say that depression can cause physical pain. Well it’s true; your emotions have a profound effect on your well-being.

It turns out that something as simple as good feelings have healing effects on the body with everything from HIV to the flu. It’s been proven that those with a negative outlook will take longer to heal from illness, as well as physical injury. According to Martin Seligman, an expert in the field of positive psychology, there are four things that affect our health that we have control over: smoking, exercise, diet, and optimism.

According to Seligman, optimism is at least as important as the others. Though scientists don’t fully understand the biological mechanisms at work, they know that negative emotions can cause a spike in the hormone known as cortisol, which suppresses the immune system, making it harder to get better.

Are you positive and optimistic? Do you find that you heal quickly? Will you share your experience?

Or do you react negatively and are you willing to admit it? Are you a slow healer?

Do you smoke, exercise, and what are your dietary habits?

HealthyLiving: You have raised some very good points.

I would reckon that negative emotions described herein would refer to those which do not have a positive outlook. They would be in contrast, ie "I am never going to get well, I am going to die". "No one likes me, I have nothing to live for." "They say there is no cure, I'm a gonner." "There is no hope for me, it's no use even trying to get better."

vs.

Having a positive outlook...
"I will be up and outta here in no time at all."
"I am going to do all I can to help my body heal quickly."
"I am going to avoid foods that will worsen my condition and eat healthy, healing foods."
"I have friends and family who love me and I must get well for them."

Catch my drift???

HL

I do, I do. I get a wee bit carried away. In 25 years, I've gone from someone who ignored his own feelings thinking I was being noble and selfless to someone who has realised that you ignore your emotions at your own peril and that breathing, although a selfish act, is absolutely necessary for survival.laugh

This is why I believe spiritual growth has to come first. My spirit has to be strong enough to stand up to my own emotions which often want to do the wrong thing. I usually know the right thing to do. Acting on that thought is a whole different ball game. As we say in AA...Lack of power, not lack of knowledge was my dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live.....

I would not dare suggest where others find that power but without it, for me, your very wise words would get me nowhere. handshake

Bad

And that's why several years ago I wound up with periodontal disease that cost a fortune to correct. I still react to stress very badly but I'm working on using bio-rhythm to calm myself down. Stress makes cortisol which is a fat that surrounds your abdomen which is extremely bad for your health.

Negative emotions or stress as I like to call it, can definitely manifest itself into physical ailments and pain. I have a tough time dealing with stress and am going through quite a bit of it at my workplace...I'm wound up tighter than an eight day clock. sigh

I understand exactly what you're saying. I actually just realized that in the past few years, I've gotten sick a lot less than I used to. The reason, as I now acknowledge, is that I started taking control of the depression I've battled since the age of nine. I refuse to take medication for it again, as I have found holistic treatments that do a better job of helping to control my depressive episodes.

I have also been eating a lot healthier, which definitely factors into my physical health. It helps emotionally, as well, since I have lost over 40 lbs. since I decided it was time to get my life under control.

Overall, I feel better, I look better, and I live better than I ever have in my life. This is all because I got determined to live a better life, but more importantly, I decided to get healthy. The mind is an incredible thing.

If you're open to suggestions, I highly recommend aromatherapy. That's one of the tools I use to fight depression and anxiety. Some really great scents for stress are jasmine, frankincense, myrrh, vanilla, lavender, bergamot, heliotrope... There are probably thousands of scents for anti-stress, and calming the mind. I suggest looking them up, if you're interested.

You don't even have to burn the oils, and it's more cost-effective if you don't. What I do is I put a few drops of whatever oil I'm going to use in the basin of my oil burner, and fill the rest with water. I put that up on the highest surface in my bedroom, and the scent lasts about a week. I also know where you can get great quality essential oils for really great prices on ebay, if you need.

I really do recommend using aromatherapy. It's effective, has no side effects, and it makes your home smell lovely. Good luck, my dear. :)

Thank you SE, I might give that a try. It's amazing how some small changes can alter our moods.hug I find that listening to music I really like is calming as well. I'm sure there's lots of things I could do to improve my stress levels and just need to explore them. In my case, there is something pending that needs to be resolved and I know I'll feel much better once it is...especially if it goes in my favor. teddybear bouquet
