Nothing new, there are several companies trying to patent every aspect of "life" itself, including all the basic building blocks of everything, including humans.

Nestle, among others is just another company I won't buy from, for many reasons, including this. Look up child labour for harvesting cocoa among other things. It seems money is all that matters, but really, it's control, the money will follow.....

The pharmaceutical companies have been monopolizing every traditional cures, patenting their extracts or isolated chemicals from those plants. Now they want to patent a flower? It doesn't surprise me.

One day a country will disobey their rules and won't recognize them any right of their patents.

Is Nestlé trying to patent the fennel flower, also known as Nigella sativa or black cumin?


Nestlé is not trying to patent the fennel flower.

We made patent applications for a compound that can be extracted from Nigella sativa (also known as fennel flower, black seed and black cumin) or from other plants, to help treat or prevent food allergies.

We filed patent applications in 2009 that claim the use of an opioid receptor stimulating compound for the preparation of a composition to treat or to prevent food allergy. The patent application is for the compound, not for the plant the extract comes from. We have not filed a patent on the plant itself.

Plants provide the raw material for many Nestlé products. Our longstanding research programme in plant science is designed to find ways to improve the quality of plants and materials derived from plants, to improve the sustainability of their production and the stability of their supply. We have introduced a number of measures to ensure that we respect the principle of fair access to the raw materials we use. Our suppliers must be compliant with national laws and international agreements.

We recognise the importance of biodiversity. We respect the sovereign rights of nations over their natural resources including genetic (biological) resources. We fully support the principle of fair access and benefit-sharing as described in the Convention on Biological Diversity of 1992 and the more recent Nagoya Protocol of 2010.


Besides,you can only patent a Plant which you hybridized,like in the Rose-growing or Tulip-growing Business for Instance!
And then only that particular strain!

Nestle will need an awful lot of it preparing that Compound!
And that all they will or can patent,since Fennel isn't their creation!
