I think the answer is... probably not. The people who run online dating services have an image to protect. They don't want to admit that the 20-year experiment that was online dating was a failure, so they'll probably keep it going on life support. I don't know anyone who met anyone through OLD.

Also I notice PoF discontinued its forums, what does that tell you? uh oh

OTOH anyone can start a meetup group... there are dozens of them in my area that do the bars/nightclubs thing, but the biggest and most fun ones I've been to are the alcohol-free ones. I went to a singles potluck that I found on meetup and I had a blast (200+ people showed up).

Also, I imagine it's pretty hard to create fake women for meetups... OTOH any shmuck can make fake female profiles and put them on an OLDS to make it look like they have plenty of women...

All really good and valid points.
I think that this site in particular is more of a social network than a dating site on which many of the members are no longer single but hang around for the friends that they have made.
Despite the inherent annoyance of weeding out fakes and scammers it is a kind of cool way to interact with peeps from around the world.

I however did actually meet someone through online dating...not here but she is someone I otherwise would not have met since she was over two hours away but I agree with you completely that meetups are a fundamentaly better way to get aquainted.

handshake

Yes, by 1924 it was very clear that the aviation experiment was a failure. Bamboo sticks and old bedsheets, this would never develop into something useful.

So, because you don't know anyone who has developed a relationship from using online dating, nobody ever has?

Surely, online dating is not an experiment, but a business and so the measure of that success, or failure is profit. If its profitable, the companies will continue to provide the services.

Perhaps the error in your logic is to think that the aim of dating websites is to facilitate people's relationships? Just like diet pills, or tanning pills, or arthritis pills, people will consume, however shoddy the product out of perceived need.

I've yet to come across a dating website whose focus is facilitating as many healthy, happy relationships as possible, ergo its entirely up to the user to use the tool to his, or her best advantage.

ItsMeMark: Also I notice PoF discontinued its forums, what does that tell you?

It tells me their system of member moderators could not be sustained due to a lack of expertise and that the site owner did not view, or calculate the forums as financially viable with a more professional management.

Glad you had a nice time.

Because noone has ever bragged, nor scammed face to face? Because you don't get replies to some of your mails? What? I don't understand what you're saying here, sorry. dunno

PS. Baaaad title for a thread. My first reaction was, "I can meet up with people without it killing me!" snooty

You're not likely to win many friends on a forum mostly contributed to by wrinklies, I dare say. giggle

Some dude in Australia (an admin of another board no less) said he knows plenty of couples in his neck of the woods who met through OLD. Guess the mentality Down Under is totally different from here in the States. confused

Never mind fretting about other people's mentality, fret about yours.

A dating site is just a tool. Its up to each of us to use that tool to create something positive for ourselves.

That positive thing might simply be a learning experience from talking to people from all over the world.

A friend of mine recommended dating sites to me. She found herself as a single mum being unable to go out and socialise. She said it was like having the pub in your living room in the evening and whilst she never expected to find the man of her dreams via a dating site, she did learn about the kind of man who she wanted to share her life with. She learned, she processed, she moved on.

The worst thing about online dating is misleading images, the old myspace angle(cute face, ugly body).

The best thing is that I can see it here in my underpants and stained vest talking to women that would be an 8 on an off day. I can't do that down the pub!
