modermen: Turning back the clock

Whats the point of turning back the clocks, is it out dated? has it served its time, are the winter evenings shorter did you get that extra hours sleep.
I feel like it is outdated. But to be honest that is the self serving me that feels that way. Here in my area what it means is the children that go to school are not standing at a dark bus stop or walking down a dark road. So I guess since it does work well for the little darlings I will survive and at least come summer time here I have the long lazy days. Does it do any good in your area? The setting the clocks back and forward?
