Evening all. Not sure if many of you have experienced this but would like some feedback from those who have. This is a condition which has inflicted me since early childhood through to my early thirties. I've only recently begun to research it and discovered its more common than I realised. While there are lots of theories surrounding it, they are just that, theories. There is no medical or spiritual basis that can be taken as concrete. Seemingly it affects 6% of the population and generally occurs from adolesence to early childhood. People give varying accounts of their encounters but mine have never varied. Thankfully I haven't had one in about 4 years. Curious to know if it affects anyone here.

OH I have had and still have these periodically...scary stuff!! Mine started in my early twenties, and it would maybe happen 2-3 times a year. But yah the inability to move and the most frightening this I KNOW I'm awake...you try to say something and can't....absolutely horrible!
This is my experience. I wake up at night and am paralysed. I can't move a muscle or make a sound, yet I am conscious and alert. And this is the weird bit. I sense a presence of some sort in the room which seems to intensify and its a utterly terrifying experience. Then its over in about a minute and I can move and function normally but try going back to sleep after that!!

Its the sheer terror of it rather than the inability to move that used to get me. Its indescribable

exactly, I had a doctor tell me it's just stress related, he maybe right, I don't know...but like you there is a presence in the room and I've even felt the need to defend myself...scary stuff!!!

Omg, I've experienced that once, many years ago.I didn't realise it had a name. The most frightening experience of my life.

It may be stress related, it could be a sleep disorder, a diet imbalance or a variety of other reasons. But thing is, no one seems to know for sure!!

What I want to know is ...what's with the "presence" that seems to be a common experience?

Hi It sounds similar to the 'restless legs' syndrome where people cannot control their limbs from moving when sleeping. Also no conclusive diagnosis on its causes. Stress does seem to be the most common hypothesis.

I can't speak for him, but it's not something you see, but something you feel...I can't even begin to describe it...in all honesty I think it's happened to me maybe once or twice in the last 2 yrs since my divorce...and it's been a very long time since the last one

No, it's a different experience, Diz. I get restless legs. It's horrible but manageable. Sleep paralysis is utterly terrifying. I was convinced at the time, that the devil himself had paid me a visit.

I've read long time ago that stress can bring on a lot of things that one wouldn't think that it could.
