They could be a fascinating conversationalist, and you may find you have many things in common; or they could be a total bore and an intellect that matches their looks. How will you know if you reject the opportunity, and it's only a few hours of your time?

If you met this person at a party where there are mutual friends or acquaintances, you have an opportunity to inquire before you make a "date". Meeting in a public restaurant or even another friends place, or another night out where he/she is invited seems OK to me?
I agree, I would be leery of any pick-me-up attempt in a bar scene.
