Alas Thomas Jefferson wrote, much to the consternation of religious bigots, that "...I contemplate with solemn reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church and State..."
To inflict Christmas on Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Zorastians, Pagans, New Agers, Animists, Atheists and etc. is unfair. And please don't be so simplistic in your thinking to try and tell us that this is a Christian nation and all the other religions should either become Christian or go back to wherever they came from. This country was founded on the principles of religious freedom and certainly no one should be demonized if they don't conform to cultural norms.
I happen to like Christmas but then that's a personal choice, one I wouldn't inflict on anyone else.
I hope I haven't misconstrued what you said iRon12345 but no one, except the self-righteously smug right, is advocating that any one's right to religious freedom be curtailed. All we're saying is that don't impose your religion on me. If I don't want to be greeted with a Merry Christmas then let's not make a big fuss about it. Respect my decision and wish me happy holidays or nothing at all.
You know what...I don't care one way or another which way one believes. If someone of a different faith says something to me that they hold dear, and I do not...I just say thank you, and take no offense. I want others to do the same for me. I am tired of walking on egg shells. If I say Merry Christmas to a non believer, then all they have to say to me is this...Thank you, but I don't celebrate Christmas. To which I would answer, Sorry, is Happy Holidays okay"?
Dude you live in a country founded on christen values and morals and yes you have the right not to believe and I will die for that right.
Just a side note when I say Mary Christmas to some one it’s not to disrespect anybody or anyone’s belief. It is they that choose to feel disrespected.
Let me say it this way. When I am wished happy Honokaa or happy Qunza I choose to not feel disrespected. I feel the opposite, I have just been made a part of their believe and their value system. I have been elevated in kindness of someone sharing there believe with me. In my book, there is no grater honor than to be made apart and to share in the calibration of their beliefs
We should not be concerned by anyone else’s believes we should celebrate with great joy how we all feel.
Very eloquently put iRon12345 but whether this country was founded on Christian values or not isn't the issue.
I don't think you will offend anyone if you wish them Merry Christmas if they come to your house or you met them in the street. I am sure you wouldn't be so forgiving if every time you walked into a Walmart (heavens forfend) you were greeted by a cheery faced matron wishing you Happy Kwanzaa in exclusion to all other greetings. You wouldn't be quite so sanguine if your children were led (exclusively) in a Jewish celebration of Hanukkah excluding Christmas.
These were things that were clearly foreseen by the founding fathers who themselves had fled religious persecution in the old countries. I am touched that you're willing to die for me but I'd sooner have your vote instead.
