Since my latent satellite up grade and my ISP's new found ability to assess my data usage I have been doing a little more reading . The Kings Speech has a little passage that comment on when Phillip met Liz . As she had not met any other young men at the time her father was not happy and discouraged her . Two party's were held stacked with young bums to give Liz a choice . Phillip was not invited to either part's . Seems Liz's and Phillips mind were made up . Even when they were engaged her Father would not let them announce the engagement for some time hoping they would go their separate ways . Pity Liz and Phil didn't meddle in their offspring's affairs before they all married .

robplum: I go with the monarchy not only because in current case Aunty Liz doesn't interfere in the general day to day running of our government. (Goff deserved to get chucked out, he couldn't maintain supply)
Secondly the Constitution is in my opinion, by a long country mile one the of the worlds best constitution.
I would however many of our lamebrain politicians in Canberra and the States display no respect for our Constitution, most couldn't possibility have read the Constitutions Definitions, or Howard wouldn't been able to amend the Electoral Act in the illegal way he did.

Our form of Govt is called the "Westminster System." This is a reference to having 2 Houses of Parliament (Qld being the exception).

Due to our "heritage" of obtaining "self-rule for a colony" the Monarchy did have the last say in what happened in this new colony, just in case we did not conform with the status quo of GB ideas. Took many years for some Aussie born people to accept they were not Pommes.

And oddly enough, our system of Govt is not wholly based on English Parliament. We do not have Lords as described in English Paliament but do have "Senators" based on the USA Consitution.

Yeah, we have a Yankee system of Parliament.

And maybe Gough was kicked out because OUR Consitution did say that someone who cannot govern should not be there and there was that Escape Clause. TG that there was that escape clause in those days.banana But even having the Senate these days does give some chance of thought before decisions are made. Except QLD which has abolished the Upper House so Govt-in-Office can do what it likes.

But the downside of the changes resulting from giving Aunt Lizzie the flick from the final say (okay, English Parliament) for us Colonials is that no longer do we have a Right of Appeal to a Higher Court other than the Australian High Court. Okay, there is The Hague but that is very limited in its powers of judiciary regarding intenral affairs.

It does seem that Sir Pete has been a hit with the Vics who suffered the last Vic fires.
