What most often comes out and that I hear when people talk about Jesus is that he died for us. I'd like for some to elaborate on that...why is it or how do you see in that - that he died for us.

I want to hear personal insights, got any anyone?

Aria,

You have got to read the New Testament. That is too big of a question for me to answer. Lorraine.

to me it means Jesus died to take away our sins.

He sacrificed himself and his death paid for our sins. He choose this death. Teaching was important to Jesus but his death was his most important ministy IMO. We therefore remember Jesus thru the cross as a symbol of Christianity.

woah...taking it a little bit personnal? what makes you think my question became relevant after you stating your views on what he died for? no it hasn't...it's come up a few times and it will continue to. That is why I asked.

I have to say that spagooch is closest to my view of why he died. Not sure I want to add anything now...seems like this is another thread that could or may turn sour.

There is a theory that Jesus spent his pre-Gospel years in East Africa, ie Ethiopia, Eretria, etc. Ethiopia has a very old Christian community. It is said that after they got wind of Jesus's crucifixtion in Jerusalem, that Christianity really took off there. Hard to almost impossible to prove, but a theory nonetheless.

Simply because since Adam and Eve committed the first sin...it seperated us from God because He is a perfect and Holy God(sinless)
There wasnt ANYONE that could pay for the sin because there wasnt anyone perfect enough...expect Himself so He decided to be the perfect sacrifice to pay our way back to Him...and thats where Jesus comes into the picture...He was the sacrifice...so WE didnt have to pay for it...He took our place all because of His great love for us.

actually you also gave another thought that has also made me questions the why to people thought that way about...Eve Adam and the apple.

When Eve shared the apple with Adam, I see it as Eve having stopped living completely for God and in God. Trying to think of a simpler way to explain this but I can't find any easy way.

I don't see it as God having forbidden them to eat the forbiden fruit as the main moral of the story to be taken word for word. Without taking it too far I find the metaphore is quite simple. Eve stopped living for God and in God or with God...

It is my belief that the Genesis story was written by man in a highly patriarchal society. The story is to validate the subjegation of women. A story proclaimed to be the word of God to simply ratify women being second under men in ancient Judaic culture. The Genesis stories are the first of the four chapters of the Old Testament that make up the Jewish Torah. Blame the gals for man's downfall...and forever be subject to them. A shrewd story for a hugely patriarchal society.

It is crazy spidey because people again are just quoting scripture and reference to scripture, without backing it up with their own thoughts on the subject. This is turning to a discussion of Christian theology. Ask any cleryperson. Scripture has no place in theology. By just vomitting up scripture to answer questions and answering them with the token, "Coz it says so in the bible", makes those resposes juvenile, and, oh so self-righteous. Give an example of how your beliefs in Jesus affect YOU. Why do YOU believe. What do YOU believe. Do you not have a mind of your own?
