There was a tv show called "Clean House" for the boarderline hoarders. NNash the host who offer them to give up their stuff and clean up and have a yard sale and with the money from the proceeds, their team of carpenters, organizers and builders would come in a redo their home. Very positive spin.

I learned from the show most hoards have trouble making decisions on stuff. When to let it go.

from the hoarders reality show tho - on woman had dead animal in her freezer that she did not want to part with....... saaaaaaaay WHAT!????

JeanKimberley: the internet has everything.....

In my real job, one of the agency's clients were hoarders. the social workers kept the pair (mother and son) under control but it was a struggle - they loved all things hallowe'en. It was a tiny 2 bedroom apartment.

i remember Halloween in Peru !, it was huge, even in the hotels :)

Nidifugous: I don't know. The reality shows are all staged from what I understand, but there probably are people like that in real life. Can't imagine them volunteering to air their problems... then again, look at what people are willing to tell on Dr Phil or Oprah.

That's what I said that the shows are probably staged.

I've watched the show Hoaders more than once and it's usually been the neighbors or a family member who volunteers the info.

It is really sad. Usually the building is going to be condemned or the children taken away if they don't clean up some. very very sad.

Mexico has a big celebration

Los Dias de los Muertos means Day of the Dead, but it is really a Mexican celebration of both life and death. Held on November 1st and 2nd, celebrants honor the spirit of family ancestors. Spirits of children are thought to return on the 1st and adults on the 2nd. Altars are built, and then covered with food and decorations. Cemeteries are decorated with fresh flowers. Paper mache sculptures depict the dead in an everyday context, such as skeletons, and most are comical in nature. Through music and feasting, everyone embraces the totality of both life and death. It is a time of celebration.

Yes Jean it is sad very sad. Some people don't realize that it's an illness or that something terrible took place within that persons life.

It's obvious that some people have become desensitized by it all.

Oh good lord. I can just imagine. The upside is that these people had some social workers looking after them. Who was the primary hoarder? the mom or the son?

I'm going to look around the net a bit. I had a girl here help out and she worked as a production assistant on some reality show in CO that has since been taken off the air. Can't even remember what she said the name of it was. She said everything is staged, including the chance meetings in the hallway, etc., AND that they were supposed to hire local talent in CO, but didn't. They brought the actors in from L.A. doh

So if I understand you correctly, the family members or neighbors volunteer the info, call the shows and then the producers talk these people into participating?

I'd see interviews given by someone claiming to be that persons neighbor or family member whether it be a son, daughter, spouse what have you.

I watched the show about Hoarders and oh my goodness the next day I went threw things in my closet and donated things..and it really was not bad.. but the thought that I had something that I had not even realized that I still had it.. I went through clothes and dishes.. I am down to bare essentials....lol....I do know this one guy the first and only time I went to his home to pick him up because he needed a ride to get a part to his car... I had to go inside... I would never go in there again... stepping over things and not sure what it is that your stepping in.. trails all through the house...it was terrible...I felt bad but what can you do...I just blew it off and never said nothing about it. It has to be embarrassing to the person...you would think...

heatherhuntsman: To date someone, I would think you would not know they are a hoarder until you saw their home. Usually I think lots of hoarders function in Society appearing normal, there home is where the hoarding goes on. Really sad. Usually some traumatic experience they got stuck at. Date?, If I knew, probably not right now. Unless I knew they were actually aware of their issue and were currently getting their life in order and getting better. It seems in a way these people are in a way brave. To actually let people see this. My goodness I would be so utterly ashamed.

I can't agree. I've known 2 hoarders. Hoarding can be evidenced not only from their homes, but also their cars, handbags and pockets. I'm talking about jacket pockets stuffed with packets of sugar, napkins, scrap paper, pencils, pens, single serving containers of jellies and jams, etc. Additionally, people who hoard things will attempt to supply their non-hoarding friends and family members with additions for their own collections.

Trauma does not necessarily bring on the tendency to hoard. Psychological problems do.

The hoarders that I have known have been disfunctional types of people who simple could not form healthy relationships. Also, both were in denial about their hoarding. They did not attempt to hide it because to them, their lives were perfectly normal.

Hopefully the above will not be interpreted as me hating on hoarders. I don't. But from what I've seen they don't do relationships very well and the OP's questions are in the context of dating. I wouldn't do it.

Hmm.. I don't know about the handbag thing.. laugh No worries, it doesn't sound like hating on hoarders. What you say makes a lot of sense. I was just thinking whether people ever think that they might have a hoarder on the other end of the computer screen....
