Yes, Bulldog, I think it can to a degree. Clearly other nations through culture and upbringing, including things/ways we are exposed to, will have their own brand of humour. Though I do think from an individual point of view, it sometimes comes down to personality and personal preference. I have known people outside the UK who are very taken with the Brit sense of humour and are more at home with it than their own peoples'.

We are renown for our sense of humour and we are able to be rather self-deprecating, dry, wry and in a sense, sometimes intellectual, i.e. we tend to enjoy humour where you need to read between the lines, double entendres, play on words, etc rather than the simplistic (its spelled out clearly what was the funny point or the punch-line). Its not to everyones taste, of course, I believe, rightly or wrongly, that Americans find self-deprecating humour quite offensive. I don't have first hand knowledge of this.

I feel that if you can poke fun at others you should be able to take it yourself, thats just the Brit way, but each to their own. Of course, we all need to be adaptable and accommodating - a cliche, I know but it would be a boring world if were all the same!!

Vivre la difference!!
