fishinacreek: how you going mate? geez they've taken over all the smaller iga grocery shops, every time you go to get a piece of meat its had the label changed to make it sound fresh, and its a week out of date lol, given up how many times ive taken food back too them ,starting to piss me off.We never had a war against them ,but theyre killing us in other ways lol
IGA stands for Independant Grocers Association and way back in the '70s was WA based moving across into SA & Vic by the late 70s. It was made up of smaller independant grocers who combined their buying power to try to become competitive. In NSW, there were a couple of similar groups, MFC being 1 although I forget the other. And a big supplier to the independants was run under the wholesale banner of Davids Holdings.
They were combating the big retailers such as Franklins, Permewans, Coles, Safeways, and Woolworths. In NSW, it was Jewels & Grace Bros competing against these big companies around 1980.
Interestingly, one hardware chain (Mitre 10 I think) was started by a few independant stores buying in bulk to get massive dicounts. The Kingsbury Hardware Store in Sydney bought cement by the semitrailer load and then sold it off in smaller quantities to other members. Oddly enough, Mr Kingsbury died of a lung condition related to ingestion of cement dust.
When ex#1 & I had our store, it was cheaper to by Coke (the cola variety) from one of our confectioners than direct from C-C. Our smallgoods came from a small wholesaler who kept costs well below buying direct from the 'manufacturers.'
Elder was former Labor premier Peter Beattie’s right-hand man before he quit the party after becoming embroiled in the Shepherdson inquiry into electoral fraud in 2000. He’s now a lobbyist helping push through Palmer’s $8 billion Waratah Coal project.
Martino also has a colourful past. He resigned as Deloitte boss in 2003 over his involvement with another company, New Tel, was under investigation for trading while insolvent.
robplum: But AFR Weekend can reveal Palmer does have a string of close associates who he uses as sounding boards for his political and business strategies.

I do find it interesting the description of former advisor, right-hand-man, lobbyist popping up as "assisting current" players in many schemes.
This is a bit like former la-boring Premiers of NSW who did not drive telling us how we should be transported and what road, rail & bus transport should be upgraded.
the ongoing Australian two party system has a political club like mentality, it is utterly corrupt, Qld and NSW probably more so than other States, while federally it is probably more wide spread than just those two States
Currently the current PM is knowingly in breach of the constitution stealing half my veterans pension and often telling falsehoods

The Commonwealth Government in breach of section 55 of the Constitution is taxing half of my Veterans Pension. 55. Please listen, some years ago the Department of Veterans Affairs asked Vietnam Veterans to stop smoking as many of us have smoked from our time in Vietnam, sadly sufferering from hardend arteries caused by quiting within five six months at least five Veterans died as a direct result of quiting and the Department promptly stopped requesting Veterans to stop.
Personally I checked with a Doctor and his advice was any damage has already occurred and it is far to dangerous to stop now. Further both my parents also suffered heart attacks as other veterans I've met did soon after quiting smoking.
I am Buddist person, my setting Member was Peter Slipper until he was stabbed in the back by the Liberal Party Peter had the courage to stand in the House on my behalf on a number of occassions, I am now unrepersented by any Member of Parliament.
Will you please have the balls to stand in the House of Parliament and demand Tony Abbott stop pushing his Christian self rightgousness rubbish in stealing half of my Veterans Pension, I have a lawful right to smoke and Abbott is using Parliament to impose his crap on others in breach of our Constitution. The Federal Government is stealing half of my Veterans Pension under the disguise they are trying to dischourge the younger generation to quite smoking at the expensive of others, Government is pushing a flawed Christain view on others and that's unlawfull.
Please stop Government breaching the Constitution.

Rob, like many others, you refer to a "2 Party System" for our politics. If you every look at the number of parties trying to influence our system of Government, you will see there are many different parties trying to influence how our Govt should be run,
A few years ago it was the Greens saying we should stop using our precious water to feed the world population - okay, there were a lot of people making money from selling irrigated food while some species of flora and fauna were suffering the consequences of the drought.
Now we have accepted/voted the PUPpy party (with a "Let's be rev-heads" supporter) dictating who should profit within Australia.
Victoria at one time had the DLP (Democratic Labor Party) having a big say in Victorian politics. Problem was that they were not left enough for the ALP but too far right for the Libs.

Rob, have earnt a wage/salary in Australia and duly paid Income Tax since 1969 (worked for a few years before but no tax involved) where that income Tax went towards a number of things. Part of that had gone to my grandmother and great-grandmother recieving an income in recognition for the many years that they worked to benefit Australia as a whole. Oops, did not happen as soon as when they stopped working or their spouse died. Grandma had to do housework (cleaning/laundry) to ensure that my father and aunt could finish their schooling. Great-grandmother was married to a wealthy builder of the time.
Sorry but you may have fought under an NZ Govt policy but I do know that your income well exceeds mine at this time and if that does exceed the poverty line...................

Travellers beware: Iceland recorded 568 earthquakes in a single day
interesting site
If you are interested in seeing an eruption start you might be in luck. A webcam has been placed at Grímsvötn, approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the crater where the eruption might start.
