saw a panel discussion on this topic a while back ... doctors there said all they really need is the umbilical cord - why that is such a big deal is beyond me but people are making a big fuss about giving it up ... sheesh, after the baby is born, what else are you gonna do with it?

frustrated

The last that I heard though, is that stem cells from a newborns cord blood will produce only blood cells and cord tissue is capable of producing bone and cartilage cells. As with adult stem cells, the pluripotency of the cords stem cells is limited.

the stem cells from embyos are the best, they say....scientists have more control to grow new fresh cells that are not already determined....the abortions that are being performed could be used and all the embryos that are just sitting there in fertility clinics....families that do not want anymore children and do not want to donate their embryos to others that want children are letting them sit there...however, they would sell them for a price, which is illegal but being done on the black market....

It's a sad thing that, IMP, that they will take payment, but not donate in the name of humanity to possibly save anothers life, I just don't get it.

Fetuses from abortions would not work as well as most or all of the stem cells have already begun to differentiate into specific cells. 5 day old embryos are still the preferred medium.
