bodleing2: Indeed, most of the moderate Muslims I've met, and I have spent some time in Pakistan, have been kind, generous and peace loving. However, we can't deny there is a threat that shouldn't be underestimate. The threat that western society faces today is from an ever increasing number of radicalised Muslims. Even the so co called 'non violent' extreme Muslims will not denounce the final aims of the radicals, if fact they endorse their aims.
The added danger is, should we tar all Muslims with the same brush, as many do, including certain parts of the media, we will widen the gulf, create even more of 'us and them' which would almost certainly see a greater shift towards extreme Islam.
We need to be aware. We must not allow ignorance, intolerance and bigotry to pollute our values and increase tensions. Islam, and most of it's followers, like all religions really does at it's core carry a message of peace, love and kindness.

Great sentiments Bod, but the reality is that until those moderate and peaceful muslims start to stand up for the real islamic values, then they have to bear the results of extremism. While they allow their own leaders to actively destroy British education, subversively try to change British law to Shaira Law, then they cannot complain when the majority start to point fingers.

The problem can be easily solved, they need to stand up against the extremists. That will gain the respect of the world!!!

20% of British Muslims sympathized with the views of the subway bombers and their motivations.

That ends the fallacy right there.

Si vis pacem, para bellum

The problem is one of firepower. Most moderate Muslims both lack weapons and also the willingness and training to use them. This has to change before the face of Islam can change. Currently any moderate speaking out against the violent acts are themselves condemned by individuals with both the weapons and the willingness to use them.

There are truths Western Society has been ignoring since the days of WWI. First is that poverty encourages a culture of violence. This is why Fundamentalists flourish in poor countries. Second is that the lambs almost always fall before the wolves and the lions. This is why a disarmed populace seeking only peace will always fall when the wolves come to visit.

If one truly wishes the moderates to be able to drive out the non-moderate, then the moderates must be armed and supported. In the case of Islamic governments the very act of arming the populace is illegal as it allows the populace to eliminate that government. Therefore like the cartoons that inspired the attack which are illegal and banned in Islamic countries those wishing to change things must be willing to break the laws against arming the people.

If only the explanation for the violent tendency of human kind were so simple to explain.

It did not work for India.....disarmament worked, peaceful negotiations worked.
