As a former, and current, employee of BellSouth, I was pleased to hear that the FCC finally gave the go ahead for AT&T & BellSouth to merge. I am looking at it from an employee perspective as well as that of a stock holder.
I dropped AT&T and Bellsouth to go with Vonage. I'm thrilled to know that AT&T no longer controls the public telecommunications market, thank God. My phone bills are less than half what they used to be. AT&T even sent me a really pretty, "romantic" card, apologizing, saying, "Maybe we didn't say 'we care' enough." Ha! Then they even sent out two of their agents, IN PERSON, to try to get me back! I said, "Sure, soon as you offer me the great rates Vonage does, I'll come back to you." And there are even other VOIP services that are less than Vonage! I'd recommend VOIP over AT&T any day of the week.
As a manager of a Customer Service unit, I appreciate your feedback. It lets me know we still have work to do to improve our image. Hopefully, the merger will allow the development of new technology. Also, there are plans for the telcos to offer competition to the local cable companies. Who knows? It might be a very good thing for consumers.
Yes.. and no at the same time. Some things will be coming with it, but they just announced 50k job cuts in the 5 years to follow as a result of the merger. I feel that at this time, they've jumped the gun and didn't fully weigh the circumstances.. and have thrown the double-edged sword off balance by more than a lil' bit.
Yeah, there are going to be jobs that will be eliminated because of the duplication. However, most of those will be in middle and upper management, not in the non-management ranks. There will be separation offers that should be pretty good. The thing that counteracts that, though, is that they are going to "repatriate" 3,000 jobs that were out-sourced to India. That means that 3,000 people who previously lost their jobs without a severance package will be re-hired. A little give and take.
I'm not sure that 3k re-hired and buy-out packages is the way to go through... with the expanding assets, I would expand further and head off into other markets previously unexplored.
There's new technology that's coming down the pipe pending 3 patents right now that's going to make major waves in quite a few aspects. Not sure if ATT/Bellsouth is going to be in on it or not, I haven't seen 98% of the data surrounding it as it's sealed. I do know that the way data is handled on the internet is going to be much more efficent, and they're predicting a major price drop as a result.
When Ma Bell broke up we got all these little dinky phone companies with local coverage of maybe two towns. We got Yelcot here which is for Yellville and Summit. Any where else out is not local. You either got to get a phone card or a cell phone. It used to be called the Phone Company but now it is anybody's guess. We will switch you for free and then you get two bills instead of just one. Lets bring back the telegraph, lol.
