If a person from the "general public" (meaning not a co-worker or associate)..questioned your "work attire"...in a derogatory way...how would you react??

if your required to wear a uniform...i would say this is what my employer expects.

if you can make the decision as to what you wear at work...i would say this is how i dress.

Before I got into healthcare, I used to work in an office - on one occasion, the female president, had the need to tell me that my skirt was too short, and that I was distracting the men in the office.

The next day, I showed up with a shorter skirt. A lot of the men came to my desk, and told me that she was jealous because she could never look as good as me!head banger

The type of work I do, I would have to dress appropriately, but if I were in the situation you suggested, I would not be able to respond, not yet anyway......I keep a still tongue, but I would make pretty someone higher up hears about it.

I get "bashed" for all kinds of things...from all kinds of people...

but i have to admit...this was a first for me...

I think i am more appalled because given my age, and WHAT I was wearing...I resent the fact that ANYONE felt they had the right to address me that way...

What is wrong with people?...Why do they take such liberties?...what makes them feel that they can??!!!very mad

I don't know that it is called jealousy. I think that it is more from their sense of being ignorant and insensitive. L.

Thanks Lorraine...I take my position as a manager in that store seriously...

If i were unable to discuss various books with a customer, have in depth knowledge of what we sell and the authors..i could understand getting a "dress down"...but certainly not for my dress code...

Just curious though...has anyone else had this happen??

It is possible that the way the uniforms are made to look doesn't appear professional to the person looking at it. I have some difficulty knowing who the workers are from ordinary shoppers in some of these stores (names witheld), but wouldn't question their validity either. Now this is only a suggestion, but if I were to have some problem with my body image on that particular day, I think the mere mention the person made regarding anything I was wearing would turn out to to be far worse than it is.

Your answer was well in line of what i expected Mychelle...however it is a valid point...

And surprisingly enough....just about everyday i question what i am wearing...whether its to work, to the store, or to the schoolyard....

Let me point out though....I have been served food by young people whose skin looks very unhealthy...however i would never be so crass as to make a mention of it...would you??

Most retail businesses right now - with the Walmart Giant looming over them - has put more effort into the customer service aspect of the store...Most customers are approached as a rule and offered our service...the ones that approach us are generally the ones that are in some rush and feel that an employee of the store is their personal shopper...JMO
