The little people make it a religion, while the people running it makes it a very profitable business.
That could apply to all churches & religions.
Thanks for confirming that, as I and others suspected, this thread is about bashing organized religion.

Who are the others?
Can you name them so I'd know who to look out for?
Do ye have a secret handshake?
Where do I get a copy of your code book?

Warp this anyway you want to, maybe your thoughts matter to somebody.

Ah right, so in that case there must be hundreds, maybe even thousands of priests, nuns, brothers etc serving prison sentences then?

Prison sentences? Where did that random tangent come from?

I'm talking about the deliberate destruction of Christian values and Christian institutions in the nations of the West.

Speaking of random... None of your replies were in anyway related to the original topic confused

Nobody, except the voices in your head, destructed anything here.
You should read what you see,not what you think you'd like to see.
What are christian values?
Are they any more or less comprehensive than moral values?

Christian institutions are doing a good job of destruction on themselves without our help.

Ask your friends & come back to me thumbs up

jimgi: You are getting closer to the original point here, without even realising it.

If someone(MY MOTHER) wants to pay, then why not??

Absolutely, The key word being "wants".
You have to accept, though, that your mother & her parents before her, came from a generation where the priest had ultimate control of their fate for life & afterlife.
If she had a gay brother, unmarried mother for a sister,a parent that would feed his family rather than make the monetary demands of the church,it wouldn't be long before their names would be read from the altar.
You can figure out the consequences of that for yourself.

I'm sure,if your mothers faith is that strong ( I have no judgement on peoples beliefs),she would have made what she felt to be an appropiate donation to the first collection,

Now the original point. Do you feel that a church with its incredible assets & wealth are entitled to prey on your mothers faith in the second, third, fourth & fifth "collections" for money that they are already stink in?
Something morally wrong with that.

The little people make it a religion, while the people running it makes it a very profitable business.
That could apply to all churches & religions.
yerra bud.. that its the" fifth" speaks volumes....
Now back away.....Irish mothers are scary ...

....and way more powerful than any church. ????

Tuesday2018: Where did I bash religion?

Perhaps I got that impression when you said "organized religion was only ever about power, status, and control".

Or was that actually meant as a compliment?

Maybe its time we stopped hammering religion, maybe "the church" even!!

Evil people are evil people no matter where they hide.

Och yes the coverup was appalling but "....70 times 7.."
If memory serves me correcty, it's was "organised religon" he was talking about..not "religion"...two very different things really :)

A lot of evil people don't have the protection of the wealthiest organisation to hide behind, or protect them, do they?

"Och yes.... but"? Oh wow....that's breathtakingly dismissive of the absolute depravity the church inflicted on the weakest and most vulnerable...hugely dissmissive!

Absolutely no way was it intended as a compliment....

Organised religon, is all about power, status and control...it's the "business" of religion, it's the hierarchy and he management of that hierarchy.., the pope, the bishops, the priests, nuns, brothers and the structures/networks/establishments, policies, procedures and laws they had in place....

Religon is faith...that's alll...and who am I to tell someone they shouldn't believe in the tooth fairy at 60 years of age...or have an imaginary best friend they can blame for all the bad decisions they make...

jimgi: Bishop of Elphin defends 5th collection for Papal visit

By Shannonside News -1st November 2018

The Bishop of Elphin is defending the holding of a fifth national collection later this month to help pay the remaining costs of the visit by Pope Francis in August.
The church has said that the World Meeting of Families deficit is in the region of €4 million and so far a total of €15.4 million has been raised through previous national collections and donations.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning Bishop Doran says the money could be gathered successfully if every adult catholic and family was willing to donate the cost of a coffee or pizza.
He says if enough money isn’t raised through the special collections on the 11th and 12th, the funds will have to be taken from each Diocese in the country.

Nobody can say that the catholic church isn't brazen
This country is always bashing the Pope and the Catholic Church.Particularly RTE and the Irish
Independent. Where was the outrage when Queen Elizabeth visited? We seem more than happy to welcome the royals, Prince William ,Harry and I almost forgot their gold digger wives!!!!

That's fine. If any group wants to voluntarily give money to fund an event then that's their business. When the state extracts money by coercion from the general population that's not OK.

It's like seeing a homeless person begging and you give them €5 as opposed to some mugger putting a knife to your neck and demanding your wallet. The amounts are also comparable. The bishop is asking each Catholic to voluntarily give the price of a coffee. How much did the government steal from you this week? Income tax, USC, property tax, excise duty on fuel, carbon tax, TV licence ....... A lot more than a cup of coffee, right?

Nobody can say the government isn't brazen

I'm a little bit unsure whether you expect a reply, when the event happened 8 months ago & the line you've used is taken out of context.
The thread had nothing to do with government.

But you do realise, if you're unhappy with the government,or with paying your taxes, the opportunity is always there for you to start a new thread about it dunno confused

Maybe it's time to stop trawling through the ancient threads
