They would be aiming for the gutter, the person nearest the kerb would be nearest the gutter. But I'd be more inclined to believe the splashed by passing traffic theory that I've heard many times.

Yes I see what you mean! I always felt my children where more protected if I walked nearest to the curb ... even when it wasn't raining!

It's visible in someone's action. I think kindness is an essential part of being a gentleman, otherwise it's only for show.To attract a gentleman, attributes are probably similar. Yes, there are a lot of chancers and guys that are gentlemen by proclamation only, but it is easy enough to figure out someone's character (and not just behaviour) when spending time with someone.
