A cat. They are very independent and loveable. They are a great first pet-but not a kitten. Make sure the cat is at least a year old and litter trained.
Dude, please be careful if you go for a fish. They are easy to take care of until you get GOLD FISH SYNDROME! That is when you look into the types, get one. Love it, see their personality, and get into breeding like me. Cats are cute, but they can bring fleas, and if you get a boy, pee everywhere. Plus they need to be let out, and sometimes they worry you. Turtles are cool, although they need much space. The red ear sliders are something I always wanted to own, although I lack the space. You buy them small but they can grow massive compared to when they were small. Do some research before you decide. All I can say.
If you have never had a pet before, I would suggest starting with the fish or maybe a turtle or some other aquarium animal. The mess stays contained. Cats are great, but they own you, not the other way around. The use a litter box, which has to be cleaned almost daily. They claw the furniture, and if you don't get them fixed right away, the males spray the walls to mark territory. If you do get a kitty, just be sure to have it fixed as soon as possible, they are like a gremlin that you water after midnight, one kitty can turn into 20 kitties in no time lol. Let us know how it works out for you
I like turtles!!! I have had one when I was a little girl, nice and strange animal, just eating green salad and quiet as possible! I was always looking at her for hours, waiting for her next slow movement... I think you need a back yard for it...
I have had about every kind of pet (domestic pets at least lol) imaginable at one time or another. Cats are probably one of the most low maintanence. Give them food, water, and a clean litter box and your set. My cats don't go outside, its just *Safer* and they don't pick up fleas that way. A fish is ok but kinda....boring lol
go for a mid-size kitten...one that's litter-trained but hasn't completely settled, personality-wise.
cats are totally cool cause you can leave them for a couple of days if needed, and they can care for themselves, especially if you get two. they play together, and you are almost unneeded.
If I were going to have pets in an apartment I'd get birds.
At least two to keep each other company.
I'd also probably take a stab at seeing if I could breed them. Breeding animals is a really great feeling.
I used to keep fish, all egg layers. I had 25 aquariums set up in my fish room and I was breeding fish quite prolifically.
Ok, so the fish were breeding and I was watching. I'm a PeepingTomBoy.
Breeding fish was quite exciting too. I didn't do it for the money though.
Anyway if you keep birds you need to be sure that your apartment is very temperature stable. They will get sick if the temperature swings up and down a lot. So don't get birds if you live in a drafty apt, or one where you turn the heat up and down a lot.
Birds can be a lot of fun even if you don't bred them. If you get them young enough you can train them to sit on your shoulder a lot. Best to wear a towel over your shoulder if you do that.
Birds can also be trained to fetch things for you. Small things like a pencil that they can pick up and fly with. You might be surprised how smart birds can be if you can see them as intelligent creatures. You have to make the 'connection' with any animal before you can seriously communicate with it. And you can't really teach it much of anything if you aren't communicating with it.
ive had iguanas. theyre cool but high maintenance. dogs are awesome if you have the time. fish are easy to care for. a friend of mine has a hedge hog fairly low maintenace and very quiet. iguanas get very big and love to whip tails and bite so be careful if you get one. its cool to see people stare at you with the wtf look when youre walking an iguana around the block lol
Iguanas are definitely high maintenance. They can make good pets, but you really have to spend a lot of time with them. That parietal third eye is really freaky.
I got a cat for Christmas her name is Supercat she is codependant and wakes me up at 4 AM in morning wanting to be petted. I had to explan to her that I was getting nothing out of the 4 AM lovin thing so it needed to stop. I don't think she listened I let you ya know........
But I will say she has made life a little nicer.........
Oh please, in FL if you want an iguana, you just get one off the side of the road. You pet the iguana, feed the iguana and parade it around to show people "look at my iguana," when they think you're cool, you put it back beside the road.
Lemme guess.... Jumped out? What did you have it in? Mine dont' do that, but I did have that problem with a few bettas. They had bad living conditions, because I wasn't experienced at the time.
Rats make good pets, but you have to clean their cage completely once a week. I had one pet rat named Cameille. I loved her, but I ran out of space due to my fish. So I had to find her a good home. And (Worst case scenario) trust me, being bitten by them is nothing. Mine was not bought as a pet, she was a feeder rat, that's how I know this. It doesn't hurt like you would expect People fear it, but rats are very very clean animals. Just make sure they see a vet every now and then, keep their living conditions clean and you got a friend for life... Well 6 years anyhow. Ah man. I miss Cameille. I made rat noises and that is how she came tome. Even when I let her roam my room, she never sped off.

Some ideas I have had so far are a cat, a fish, or maybe something like a turtle.
What would you all recommend?
