There are plenty of avocado grown in the US of A there lots of varieties Pinkerton & Jim The Pinkerton avocado is a highly recommended avocado due to their consistent production, flavor and manageable tree size. Looks like the crisis is over. Last time I was in Hawaii there were plenty of avocados growing wild roadside. Problem was they need to ripen after being picked.
You should only pick when shine goes off the skin, best way to test if ripe gently press finger by the fruits stem if soft ready to eat.
Avocado turn to oil when they are ripe, to speed up avocado ripening process it's recommend placing the unripe avocados in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana for two to three days until they are ripe.

Point is, they don't ripen on the tree. They ripen after picked. Do a search.
