I wholeheartedly agree that schools should offer much more about both the great Philosophers and their philosophy, but I'm not so sure about replacing religious "indoctrination" with philosophical indoctrination would be of any benefit to the world; it would be like trying to comprehend the infinitude of the Universe; of Creation. With religion, there is a purposeful and utilized decision. It is final and absolute; it is each religion's finite declaration of ...it's infinite God(s). It is the difference between Essence und Form. These can wreak havoc with students of both, following the lines of logic........#)

Philosophical indoctrination too exists. Must not forget about Dialectical Materialism dressed up to support a particular agenda or a person - ie. Stalin.

I hold the principle of philosophic thinking and questioning all and everything very high for the creation of a free mind.

When I see how school systems still hold classes it makes me sad and mad.

Absolutely correct; Bravo; most schools til at least university/ college level seem to be factories for turning out dull, unimaginative sycophants of what ever teachers they have; you spout almost verbatim what they say and you pass with honours. May the Gods help you if you show any originality or seriously challenge their doctrines. Ancient Greece, among other countries had a tradition of schools, especially "universities" of "in-the-round"; the Sorbonne had some classes modelled on those and they were fantastic at various sites /parks around Paris. They were packed , even in July and August. They were basically open to anyone and free. Some classes/ debates went on for hours. It was totally inspiring to let your mind truly expand.
We seem to have a dialectic ourselves; an open mind versus a disciplined mind; which is better; which is better able to cope with the complexities of modern society, to make careful, perhaps analytical decisions with set goals....
From my own experiences with friends who had majored in Philosophy, none, none were ever quite the same afterwards: they never could make decisions, especially those that even became dept. supervisors in Govt. jobs and their personal lives were all a disaster; they could never settle on anything firmly. I've never noticed so much indeciveness among others who had not majored in Philosophy...strange, as also many seemed to lose touch with reality as time went on....( I know: their brains were tampered with in secret Govt. labs run by aliens!) %D

Walt Whitman is my favourite.... Here is his "Song of Myself"

I celebrate myself,
and sing myself,
And what I assume,
you assume,
For every atom
belonging to me
As good as belongs to you.

And another author I like is Malidoma Some...

"What would it be like if the intensity of human connection
could be found here, in addition to all of the material wealth that is available?
If the human wealth could match the material wealth, what would happen?
Heaven could be created, right here".

"When we come to the end of all we have known
And are about to step off into darkness.
Faith is... knowing there will be something to step onto...
Or we will be taught how to fly".

And another one of my favourites... Michael Meade..

"Men and the Water of Life"

Initiatory events are those that mark a mans or a womans life forever, that pull a person deeper into life than they wold normally choose to go.
Initiatory events are those that define who a person is,
or cause some power to erupt from them,
or strip every thing from them until all that is left is their Essential Self.
