I have a problem AGAIN. I've tried to keep it to myself but the other night I broke down on Dana and spilled out everything.
Last week I found a stray kitten hanging around Dairy Queen, which is right next to a busy road. I worried about it and tried to catch it with my hands but it was fast and ran away into a sewer which is on the busy road. So the next day I go back out and tried to grab it again and throw it in a box, but I didn't even get a hair on it. But today I set a "have-a-heart" trap with food in it, and I finally got the kitten.
Every time I went out there the kitten would come up to me for food, but would stay a few feet away and act all lovely by rubbing against trees and mewing at me, so I pretty much fell in love with it.
I took the kitten to the animal shelter and they took him in, and said that if he/she shows that it can be socialized it will be put in foster care and then up for adoption, but if it shows to be feral than they will put it to sleep.
So my question to everyone is, did I do the right thing? As a volunteer at another shelter I feel I did do the right thing, but another part of me says "you condemned it to death for being alive!"
I don't mean this to be a self pity thread like some of my others, but I'm just very beside myself today.
The baby not caught, would be feral. diseased, and to neuterd or spayed... making the stray cat polulation more of a problem..and, diseases..which they suffer for...
Chances are good that it will go to a home being a young cat. They do take the time to socialize them now...
Allen honey, you did an absolutely right deed ... That kitten could get in a worse trobles ... or even get hit by a car. Relax my Dear Cat's lover and may your nights be calm. Okay?
You gave the animal a chance at life to be adopted, you did the right thing bro, very well done. That's beautiful that you care man, that animal could have been run over on the streets or even tormented, awesome job.
allen never feel that you broke down on me i'm your friend and will gladly listen to anything you want to talk to e about .. you did the right thing and you know it.. that cat in the wild could have grown to be dangerous and hurt a kid possibly but as a kitten if given the chance to be loving and ppl oriented it will grow to make someone a wonderful companion some day
i'm glad that you didnt give up on catching the kitten and have gotten it to a shelter
Thank you all for your kind words, it really means alot The most emotional part for me tho is how the kitten looked at me while I was driving, it stared at me with a frightened look that I've never seen before in a cat.
when i was 13 i was on my way to school with my best friend.. we walked there and home everyday ..
well i heard a cat somewhere and told her.. we stopped and followed the sound to the storm drain running under the bus stop . it was a little kitten about 3 weeks old.. looked like a mix of siamese and a few other things.. had the most gorgeous blue eyes.. anyway we took her inside and asked the vice principle if she could call the local vet and have her picked up.. we were told very rudely to throw her outside and leave it alone..
so my friend and i left school , carried the kitten to my house and my grandmother fixed her a little bed in a laundry basket and went and got her some kitten food.. and took care of her while i was at school.. i named her little bit and kept her for nearly 4 years untill she came up missing.. 2 years later after some neighbors were taken to prison she showed back up pregnant and had 2 little kittens..they were given to good homes when they were old enough and the year my daughter was born .. a wild animal killed her..
i loved that cat very much .. so i know how you feel about them allen ..
yes it is.. i saved her, raised her, lost her , found her again , and kept her till she was killed and my daughter was born.. while i was pregnant with my daughter she would lay on my belly and hiss at strangers that came near me if i was outside..

you did a good thing allen.never had a cat that liked car rides..she doesn't sound feral so chances are she will be adopted out after spending sometime in a foster home..good job !!
I live a street away from our two local shelters. I am very ALLERGIC to cats but somehow all the strays that get left outside find their way to my house! I have about 5 of them that come here to eat! Unfortunately our shelters wont take strays from residents, they have to go through animal control and they work a very limited shift and then tell you if they animal has been seen at your home by any of your neighbors, they will prosecute you for neglect. Its just crazy! I think what you did was save the animals life, its below zero here and I cant begin to tell you how many animals are left out there to freeze!!
