Sophisticated comes from the word sophist/sophistry: a subtle, tricky, superficially plausible, but generally fallacious method of reasoning.
I define sophisticated as outwardly flashy and charismatic, but inwardly insecure. This is merely my opinion based on the semantics associated with the word. Perhaps sophisticated wasn't exactly the word you were looking for?
now that I got my semantics straight, (and thanks) distinguished sounds a better option.... then again if I want to make it genderspecific, Sophisticated goes better with women, while perhaps, distinguished sounds better with men...
