Does anyone know when you need to start getting a pass port for traveling?
Because I might be going to Canada with some family for fishing and I know we need to have a pass port to get back into the states but I don't know when that starts.

Thanks.

If ya do it by mail, it can take up to 6 weeks. Or, you can do what I did last time I needed to renew and drive to chicago and do it in person. That takes a day, maybe two. cheers

Yes, you are wrong. Passports are issued by the US State Department for US citizens. Oklahoma Tag Agencies can't even correct wrong information on a driver's license. They are contractors which assist Oklahoma residents to register their vehicles on behalf of the Oklahoma State government.

Passports must be applied for in person, and the instructions are at this website:

I think he is right:

Please read:

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

U.S. Passport: U.S. citizens may present a valid U.S. passport when traveling via air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, and may also use a U.S. passport when traveling via sea and land borders (including ferry crossings).

Also here in Florida some post offices provide passport services.
Check your state also.

You didn't do anything wrong. I may have spoke too matter of factly, but I didn't intend to hurt anyone's feelings. I just have a friend who is originally from Puerto Rico who has her birth date wrong on her OK license, and she has to go directly to the Tax Commission in OKC to fix it. They cannot fix those issues at the Tag Agency. They can do an address correction, but not specific info regarding your basic identification. I own a home in OKC, so I am familiar with how the Tag Agencies work.

Most Americans aren't familiar with passport issues. I dealt with them on a daily basis at Tinker AFB as a Unit Deployment Manager.

I forgot to mention that we are driving up there.
So my corrected question is, do we need a pass port for driving?

I'd get one either way,,,,,I feel much better,,,,you never know when you might just need to hop a plane or even just more proof...I would ask the fed agency for clarification,,you would not want a distraction in the back of your mind and miss the "big fish"!

Hi Guys,

The passports requirements for US Citizens for entering Canada, Bahamas, etc (for this year) only apply for travel by air.
I copied for you the note that apply to travel "by land".

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

So for travelling by car old rulles still apply.

Have a great weekend!
