Not to put too fine a point on it but you have to see the problems that are placed on the local community before you should make such a general sweeping statement. With modernisation and new technology and Employers all the time wanting to employ less, early retirement scheme's etc, are you sure there is a shortage of labour? In this country there is not.

blushingAs is The Norm in all economies world wide, the minemum wage is set be the people that will work for the least...

But all too often, these very same people either don't fully understand the economy they are entering into or they DON'T care...

So as a rather direct result of these low wage people, The Local, state or Regonal economy is hit by crippling blows, to social, medical ans development related programs...

This all will result is higher Taxation,so in the end were they really Cheap Labore???

I tend to think NOT, in the end we were made to pay a price far greater then any of us ever had... innocent

So much aid and help has been poured into their countries Catherine, unfortunately with corruption being so endemic there, the aid doesn't get to those who most need it, no one is going to invest in war torn countries either..............they have to sort out their problems there first then possibly there's a chance of developing and encouraging investiment and employment.......hopefully anyway

Ok, I am being serious again and then I will stop.

I suggest everyone that participated in in this thread read "The Tortilla Curtain" by T.C. Boyle.

Then see if some of you change your mind.

I'm afraid my mind on illegal immigration is made up. No amount of reading or preaching by anyone will change that. It might not be right but that's the way it is, I lived through alot of the mistakes the British government made many years ago, I'm now seeing the same thing again in the mediterranean area, I'm sure it happens everywhere but this is where i live and this is where I see it affecting me and the people around me.

Three of Italy's most acclaimed veteran popular musicians - Claudio Baglioni, Riccardo Cocciante and Gianni Morandi - joined forces and voices for the first time ever at the CiaO'Scià concert at the Valletta Waterfront yesterday, welcoming among them on stage local singers Ira Losco, Ivan Filletti and Ivan Grech of Winter Moods.

The event, aimed at raising awareness of the issue of illegal migration, integration and solidarity between cultures, was packed with surprises, thrilling duets and the unprecedented performances, which may never be repeated, of the three music giants together, with their energetic medleys and trips down memory lane.

The friends crossed repertoires in a show of spontaneity and talent that sparked emotions and enthusiasm from a crowd that was spoilt for choice as the all-time Italian hits rolled on.

CiaO'Scià was opened by Baglioni - the man behind the initiative - singing Io sono qui, and was presented by Italian TV personality Fabrizio Frizzi and Louise Tedesco.

Baglioni, who sang anthems like Questo piccolo grande amore and Mille giorni di te e di me, with his own band, also accompanied the local artistes on the piano, singing Almeno tu nell'universo with Ira Losco, and sending shivers down spines.

Cocciante wowed the audience with the timeless Se stiamo insieme and Margherita, while Gianni Morandi, who has been mobbed by Maltese fans, particularly middle-aged women, delighted them with golden oldies like Bella signora and a string of other tracks that have withstood the test of time.

The concert came to a close with both local and foreign artistes on stage, singing Nel blu dipinto di blu.

I was there and it was great, and I admire these people for what they are doing... we should be a bit more like them!

i was just remembering that by the time of dictatorship in europe, a lot went abroad, mostely entered illegal to other countries. They where considered illegal at a certain point in Europe as well, although europeans!

Now, with these EU thing, they just feel saints, as in the past they never felt obliged to RUN from their countries.

doh

Two years ago, the new EU members could still be considered illegals and in some countries even in Europe, they can still be. The illegal eastern europeans! Now, things are safer, thanks got! Now, the illegaly issue is for the africans and others!yawn

it's a very contentious issue, that will be debated until well after my death I'm sure, and we all have our opinions,
However I keep my opinions to myself and still treat all with respect until shown otherwise..................I hope for peace in their countries and possibly they will stop trying to run the gauntlet into Europe

immigration will never stop, no matter how peacefull and rich a country may be! Bad news: pooverty is not the unique factor that causes immigration, having that in might is the reason why you act extremely against. You immigrated man! Don't try to have EU as scapegoat just like most do.

Immigration (LEGAL) will never stop, no matter if the native country is a paradise! No matter how strict the EU immigration politics may become, there will still be africans coming LEGALY to Europe. I didn't come here by boat you know!?

" i hope for peace in their countries and hope possibly they will stop trying to run the gauntlet into Europe"

my previous post was about this jacky. Runing is not what every black is doing in Europe. Non of my african friends is in Europe running from anything! Maybe you meant the boat issue?Well, you just have to wait for them on the coast
Get angry to your governments about letting boats in. There are a lot who came by plane.

Maybe not letting any more get in?Or send everybody home?mmm...
