In this high tech, multi-tasking, fast-paced, attention deficit world, is it any wonder why people cant see the other side's POV anymore? Do we even pay attention to what we say and do, or have we all been reduced to 30 second sound-bites within the larger framework of our lives, said, and then forgotten just as quickly?
There was a time when community meant something in the world. Now, our community may be global, but our sense of community is non-existent. The last couple of months, both IRL, and here in CS, I've started to wonder, is their a law of conservation that governs compassion? And are we in an era of diminishing returns regarding this shrinking phenomenon in the human heart?
I feel 4 u all, but I don't have the time to do anything more than send you an SMS condolence as your whole life is destroyed by a foreign power...
On a bus recently Tracy, there was an old lady with a shopping trolley on wheels, she was struggling to get off and a young man was doing the same but she was delaying him. Observing this I expected the man to help the woman but I was, to say the least, astounded as he climbed over the shopping leaving her to struggle on - indeed, a sad indictment of the times......................
same here Tracy, its nothing like we expected being an adult would be is it - I have always been a kind person but the number of times being nice has backfired and it almost makes me doubt myself, my decisions and choices of who to be kind to - its a dog eat dog world out there and it is so very sad
I remember one day, a similar thing happened to me, only I stopped to help the lady. The bus-driver got pissed at both of us for taking too long...he had a schedule to adhere to. I guess his schedule was more important than treating his customers with dignity and respect...
I do my best, I speak to peolpe every chance I get and voice these and other similar concerns - my children all have this ethic built into their personaalities now too.
I do a bit of internet DJ'ing from time to time and always make sure to make allusions to this kind of thing - but you and I are just 'ones' in the whole design - on the plus side is that we have opportunities to speak these concerns in an international forum - maybe thats why you and i find ourselves on these shores together
yes, the 'time is money' thing has sure gone haywire but its more than that, I find it so sad that those bus people were just so intent on 'self' actualisation that nothing else mattered - what kind of society are we living in that the needs of others are constantly negated and subsumed by self interest
'Many and sharp the num'rous ills Inwoven with our frame! More pointed still we make ourselves Regret, remorse, and shame! And Man, whose heav'n-erected face The smiles of love adorn, - Man's inhumanity to man Makes countless thousands mourn!
I've really been astounded with the sheer selfishness of people lately. I recently witnessed an older woman trying to cross the street. She had the right of way as well as the walk signal, but there was a man in his car waiting to make a turn and she was in his way. Rather than waiting until she had walked past his car, he decided to get as close to her as he could before pulling to a screeching halt, shouting at her the entire time. It really made me sad. If we can't even take three or four extra seconds from our lives and possibly miss a green light or two, it really makes me wonder what's in store for us in the future as a species.
I like the way you used quotes with "enlightened" times, because there is nothing enlightened about social Darwinism coupled with religious rhetoric. It seems the ideas are only at odds when it suits them...like in the classroom...
The ideals of America have always been "win by any means", otherwise we'd never have ushered in the atomic era. The pragmatic approach to devastating Nagasaki and Hiroshima, justifying atrocity by saying it would prevent a further and greater atrocity is rhetoric I find paralleled in the media of today, everyday.
"We must oppress this country in order to teach it freedom" Seems to be a very paradoxical approach to exporting democracy. Perhaps we are not exporting democracy at all.
Excellent thread Trace. A sad state of affairs, to be sure. Putting a positive spin on it, though, it makes a gentleman (or gentlewoman) stand out that much more.
Unfortunately this is the ME generation...It's all me me me me...Without much thought for others...Some people can't see beyond their own noses and what they don't see doesn't exist to them...Why???? Cause it doesn't effect them or their lives...So yep...It's dwindling for sure...BUT it's nice to see it still does exist!!!!!!!!!!
There is no excuse for narcissism. I was not taught to live like this, nor was anyone else. We are taught by the media to be like this, because compassion doesn't require you buy anything, and that is just not acceptable to the greedy...
It's a choice we make. A bad choice, in my opinion.
