Yep, I can remember riding my bike down to the border (lived 3 miles from it), looking for & catching tadpoles in one of the ponds down there...by myself....no helmet, no pads...nobody bothered me. I can remember the staying out all day to play with my friends...sometimes we'd be inside playing...but we were playing, using our imagination. Friend from across the street & her sister, we used to draw a town on the sidewalk and skate through our "town", stop at the stop signs, go to the stores...lol...wonder if she remembers that. We also used to lipsink to some 50's groups (The Shirelles for one)...wonder if she remembers that too...lol Used to fly my kite in the cow pasture across the street, used to hang out in the graveyard down the street, used to do all types of things.
Yet, when I had kids, it became clear that they weren't going to be able to do the same type of things and it made me sad in a lot of ways. Even now, I won't ride a bike on the street, it's just not safe because the drivers don't pay any attention. It's sad in a way that our kids didn't get the same freedom as we had growing up.
I survived that crisis...I STILL remember fighting my brother to ride in the back windshield of our chevy...it was like a private sun booth...adn going to drive ins...Dad smoking in the car with the windows rolled up because it was cold outside....
To think that it was ok to drink and drive back then. That was way before M.A.D. came to the picture. Wow. We really did go through a lot. Nice thread.
Used to let my 3 year old son stand between my legs and drive the car out on country roads. (very slow of course)! He thought he was hot stuff~~~ Great memories~
Now I'd be looking at 5-10 in the slammer. Times do change~
