To get back to the original thread, yes I've spent some time in the Philippines, Manila mostly but travelled around a bit.
There is a very good website about living there written by ex-pats who have retired or settled over there, I can't remember the name exactly but I'll and e-mail you if I find it again.
Nice country, very easy to get around. Very low cost of living.
Philippinas are beautiful, sweet and loyal.
I don't speak Tagalog but English is widely spoken. Would recommend somewhere other than Manila unless you want the big city life. Cebu is much nicer in my opinion.

my ex went there.he said it is very cheap (money wise) and beautiful.

I love the phillipine's, the nicest people from any country, i've been. I've been there both on business, and personal. They speak English in even the remotest areas, even the wee chilren speak english, so no worries about knowing the language and ther's about120 different dialects.
I've travelled alone many times, never feeling unsafe, sure there's some bad people like any city, but the good there are amazing. I made so many great friends. Not sure your purpose for going, please try to see as much as you can, there's small islands, incredible, I've gone hanggliding there, travelled the rapids where the film apcolips now(spelled wrong, so tired my brain is not funtioning well at this hour)
