I have a total ileostomy, and am wondering if anyone else here is an ostomate (who's willing to admit it.) I'm wondering what your experience has been about dating as an ostomate, or dating someone with an ostomy.
I know there is no right or wrong about when to tell someone about it, but if you have any experience with this, I'd really appreciate some suggestions or feedback.
I was dying of malnutrition and dehydration, and was down to 95 lbs (I know, hard to imagine now!) because my colon was "shredded"... ulcerative colitis.
I'm doing extremely well now. I was sick for 11 years before it got so bad I had to have the surgery, and I have a fantastic life now! I'm so grateful for the surgery, it GAVE me a life.
I would just like some feedback from anyone who has been through this themselves or have dated someone with an ostomy.
Ileostomy: an operation in which the end of the small intestine, the ileum, is brought out through an opening in the abdomen. The contents of the intestine, unformed stool, are expelled through this opening into a bag called an appliance.
I always wanted to ask this question. If you have this surgery. Is the need for going to the bathroom in the morning gone? I mean my bladder is not my best friend in the mornings. I wanna stay in bed but bladder says no, and bladder always win. No offens now Meilandra it´s a genuine but maybee dumb question.
With ileostomates it's not "uniform" at all, it's all liquid, for the reason I said above. Only colostomates have any uniformity; the more colon left, the more uniformity.
And btw, you can't see any of this, the bags aren't see through or anything, it's close to my skin color and it has layers.
Rational or not, I actually feel less self-conscious about the bag than I do about my post-surgical weight gain, since I began fully absorbing nutrition for the first time in 11 years.
I have another question if you don´t mind? The remaining part, the exodus so to speak, is it sewed up on it´s upper part? If not and you where to use the backdoor entrance, could it cause infection or pregnancy outside the whom? Or do they remove it copmletely and shut the door? No need to answer if this feels akward.
I don't know if there are any here these days, but I did want to post an update.
Yes, there is love after ostomies... I am engaged to a fantastic man who thinks my stoma is "cute", gets disppointed when he won't be around to see it when I change my bag, and thinks I'm drop dead gorgeous, even with my surgical scars.
