Mark Degasperis was furious his mother spent five days on a stretcher at Toronto Western Hospital waiting for a room with 25 patients ahead of her -- until the Toronto Sun made a call and she was suddenly moved to a room yesterday.
"They were giving us the same old song and dance why she was in the emergency department with only a sheet draped around her. I couldn't even call her because she didn't have a phone," Degasperis of Georgetown said.
Heather Degasperis, 60, has a dangerous bacterial condition and was sent by her doctor to Toronto Western because it has the experts for her condition.
"She is not well and wasn't able to sleep and she wasn't getting any better. She needed peace and quiet to sleep.
"This is a terrible environment. I suggested taking her to another hospital, but we were told there are long waits across the region and the doctors we need are here. So there was nothing we could do," Degasperis said yesterday.
"I'm angry we pay such high taxes and the more money we throw at the health care system the worse it gets. People shouldn't be lined up on stretchers in the emergency department. If you are sick you should get a room."
Because of patient confidentiality laws, the hospital isn't able to comment on patients, so it is unclear if Degasperis's mother jumped the line because the Sun made a call.
Dr. Bob Bell, president and CEO of the University Health Network, which includes Toronto Western, said the problem of overcrowding has nothing to do with the emergency department.
"The problem is the flow of patients in the hospital. What we need is an alternative level of care for folks who are not ready to go home but don't need acute care," Bell said.
"We are trying desperately to improve the experience folks have, but we need more capacity in the community." I wonder how much she pays for her free health care?

That is what we get for free. Oh my , the stories I could tell you about our health care would scare you. Just think we pay HST (Hospital Sales Tax) on EVERYTHING new or old.

I'm not saying we've got the best health care in the world, although it's good. But I'd hate to lay on a gurney for 5 days waiting for care. Even our indigent get better than that.

Indy: I never took it as a slap at all. Some of our EMERGENCY room are even closed for the weekend. We have a poor health rating for our hospitals.

It's not free anymore...There is a new healthcare tax in Ontario that everyone has to pay....I guess this is the kind of care you get in return!!!!!!!!!!
It's the shortage of doctors that has the system so bad now though and minimum waiting times are around 5 hours in almost any hospital emergency room....We can thank the Rae government for that though...they capped doctors fees and even instituted what they called Rae days which were days when doctors offices had to be closed to save money....The influx of Canadian doctors to the U.S. didn't take long after that and now we are left with 1000's of people with no doctor because we don't have enough and hence the reason for the influx of people in emergency rooms!!!!!!!

It use to be said that the axe of a nurse meant an increase in the Ceo's pocket. One CEo in ontario jumped from $340,000.00 in 2001 to 750,000.00 in 2008. managers are ultimately getting raises to. Chop, Chop goes the axe. And unfortunely programs that are run are needless in some areas. You never know maybe some will fiqure it out someday, when the worse happens.

I read stories almost daily about Britain's "free health care".....and some of the messes it's created.
Personal view, the medical field needs regulated, but anytime the government runs something, it f-cks it up.... Social Security going broke, Medicaid going broke, over-regulating the oil industry-4.00 gas.
