If you want a good glimpse of the multiracial experience in America, get inside Louie Gong’s skin.
“I’m Nooksack, I’m Chinese, I’m French and I’m Scottish,” Gong tells viewers of a multimedia piece he placed on YouTube to help spark discussion of multiracial issues. “... When I was a kid, I drank my Ovaltine with real milk, and my cousins and I liked our fried rice with salmon.”
As America was settled and evolved over the past 2 centuries, people, from all over the world went there to settle. These people were part and parcel of the growing country and eventually intermixed, through marriage and etc., and the Heinz 57 became the norm: I am part German, French and English. Most Americans are a mix of more than one culture, ethnic group, or race. During the past century, the look of America has changed somewhat in that so many Americans are not just multi-ethnic but multi-racial. The phenomenon is happening all over the world, including to a great extent, Europe.
As it was during the past two centuries, the blending together of various cultures, ethnic groups and races is not easy. It is not going any more smoothly in other parts of the world.
The question here is a simple one, ala Rodney King: Why can't we all just get along? Why can't we respect each other? Why don't we make an effort to know about each other?
Because whatever we say, we are not doing this. I see many problems daily, here in Europe and in America, and in othe places. Lack of respect, lack of acceptance, lack of interest in getting to know and understand people of another culture, etc.
What is the problem? Why is it so difficult?
