Yesterday a female friend argued over a point she thought I had made and wouldn't let me correct her misconception of my beliefs. I don't know why this happens, but I think it has something to do with female perception of a male's linguistic ability. Like you say, the two are different but we men aren't totally incompetent.

totally incompetent! oh you poor dear guy. i am so laughing at you. but some woman called you totally incompetent, and you took it to heart, that you couldn't do anything at all right. and what she should have said was you didn't do that one thing right but you do do everything else so right and are so competent. i bet you she really did value you but didn't express herself right. a little incompetent i guess you still wouldn't want to be though. men like to be competent or at least like to feel they are looked at that way by the women who adore them.

I read a really good quote the other day that suggested none of us really sees the world how 'it is' but instead how 'we are'. maybe that's it. I shouldn't look for the fifth leg of the cat.

then I'd probably travel by horse
