pixiestyx: you can get a passport in many instances in much less time..it's called expedited..i got one in less than a week..it does not always take months depends on the reason you give for requesting it be expedited...
My passport was expedited through my former employer and I got it in 1 1/2 weeks.

had my flight all set up ticket purchased and all
got mine in 3 days
but, you got to do the legwork.... go to the state office in person and be willing to stand in line for hours and then go back in 36 hours to pick it up... was worth the wait to me to make my flight
prncss4someone: do you know what the difference between a passport and a visa is? I've never been out of the country, except to Canada, so have never needed anything like that. But you said you need your passport before your visa.........why would you need both? Well you said only some countries require your Visa, but then again, they would already know you have a passport. I'm confused.
lets go one by one
the passport is the oficial document of any country that is acepted by others countries
some countries have agreements and in those case among those countries the acepted documents could be others
when you traveled to canada, at that time, a valid driver licence could be used for traveling pourpuse
the US have no actual agreement with other countries as to use a diferent document, so you will need a passport
the visa is the permit a citizen from one country need to enter the foreing country
again, some countriies do not require a visa, others yes
as for example, chile requires an entry permit, that you can get when you arrive at the airpor, so you dont have to worry for a visa
canada do not requiere any visa from americans, you will not need a visa
first step to get a pasposrt,. you will have a valid document for traveling abroad
second step. to get a visa if you are planing to visit countries that requires a visa those countries will ask you for your pasport to stamp the visa in it
i hope i saucced to express it
as for the requiremente 1. picture ID 2. state isued birth certificate 3. to fill a form (you can get it at most post offices) 4. 2 passport pictures

In my case, I just filled out a few forms and gave it to a secretary and she did all the other work (she was very experienced in obtaining PPs). I did have to go to the PO for a picture and that was it.

since i was a child i was used to have my pasport valid i do not really care how long does it takes
i only speak for how long topok to my friends
sorry to give the wrong information
i belive if all those that want the expedited passport will stand on line to have it in 3 days, then no one will jhave it in 3 days, as the backlog the pasposrt office have is huge
again that is my opinion, not your life experience
obviously they do have to approve your reason to approve the expedition of it...i was only pointing out that it does not take months in all case...if information is given shouldnt it be accurately given ?
the standing in line comes after you have requested and been approved for the expedited passport....
if you want to get it faster than in months then you need to stand in the line wiht those who have appointments set up nd are in line for their appts.......
it is part of the process in order to have your passport in hand quicker than the normal waiting period...
sorry if you took this in any other way than it was intended..I only corrected the amount of time it takes that you posted as it was inaccurate....

thank you for the info. Here in Michigan, they are saying it can take up to 4 months to get a passport just to visit Canada when it comes into effect. I guess I'll start working on mine soon, then I will have it by the time I am ready to travel.

Then once you get your passport... usually good for 10 years.....Don't let it expire.....Easier to renew them then to resubmitt.
i put in what my opinion of this was as to my own experience..which was being discussed in this thread... these are my friends as well. i can post to any subject in any thread with my opinions. it is not exclusive to any group of people......
