Yes, this makes sense of course - and I did figure it out after a while!

logic doesn't seem to work in emergencies... so I guess, no matter how much we're hammered to put the gas mask on first, we'd probably be sorting out the kids first...

They should!!! Maybe you should apply for a patent on it, and save thousands of lives!!....

I saw a documentary on plane accidents, and it was interesting to hear how the mind works in emergency situations. The biggest reason for people getting stuck in crashed planes and not being able to get out (often resulting in fatalities) is that they cannot get their seat belt open!! We are so conditioned to open seat buckles the way we do in cars, that in a state of panic on a plane we try to open it the same way.

This is why it is so important to listen to and watch the safety information the crew always gives before take-off when flying - even if you have flown your whole life, and think you know these procedures, they might not help you in an emergency until they have been engrained into your subconcious by repetition.
