Scientists Find Microbes That Eat Garbage, Excrete Crude Oil Monday, June 16, 2008

"Ten years ago I could never have imagined I'd be doing this," says Greg Pal, 33, a former software executive, as he squints into the late afternoon Californian sun. "I mean, this is essentially agriculture, right? But the people I talk to — especially the ones coming out of business school — this is the one hot area everyone wants to get into."
He means bugs. To be more precise: the genetic alteration of bugs — very, very small bacteria — so that when they feed on agricultural waste such as wood chips or wheat straw, they do something extraordinary. They excrete crude oil.
Unbelievably, this is not science fiction. Pal holds up a small beaker of bug excretion that could, theoretically, be poured into the tank of the giant Lexus SUV next to us.
Not that Pal is willing to risk it just yet. He gives it a month before the first vehicle is filled up on what he calls "renewable petroleum." After that, he grins, "it's a brave new world."
Pal is a senior director of LS9, one of several companies in or near Silicon Valley that have spurned traditional high-tech activities such as software and networking and embarked instead on an extraordinary race to make $140-a-barrel oil from Saudi Arabia obsolete.
"All of us here — everyone in this company and in this industry — are aware of the urgency," Pal says.
rasgumby: but our Government is too stupid to do something so simple but wise
the goverment is not so stupid as you belive
they are much smarter than you
they already have convinced you to give up your freedom to such a point that the PEOPLE do not go to the polls to vote
they are so smart that by promising inposible things they get the votes of the few people that vote
and they are such smart people they coinvice yoyu to pay their salary and let then rise they own salary
but if some day the PEOPLE decide to go back and rules forthemseves by atendiong the polls and voting things might change
when the goverment (and otjher politicials) will see the PEOPLe atending the polls voting will be more then 95% of the polulation,m thingsd might change
you have to have a permit you have to buy those from a licenced contractor
they will chare you $10.000.oo for a solar panel that anyone can biuld for only $100.oo
it is also part of the goverment bussines
they will get their momey anyways, but taxing the gasoline or by taxing the use of "free energy"
Crasy!!!
Here we get subsidized to install solar water heaters, which have become really cheap...something like 6/700 dollars.
Now we are also planning, as a country to install as many voltiac panels and wind generators for domestic purposes as possible. There will also be significant subsidies on those. Albeit there are still unsolved technical problems with the electricity grid system to be sorted out...
But if western society does that, we will drastically reduce our dependance on oil, and our chances of being blackmailed by oil producing countries as is the case today.
Further, if oil revenues fall, countries that are basing thier muscles on this revenue will disappear....once and for.
Possibly there are too many vested interests in the US with the money involved in oil that it makes it very difficult for this kind of mentality to take hold.
Thank God, the EU not only thinks differently, it is acting on it NOW.

HealthyLiving: OPEC is selling oil for over $135.00 a barrel.
OPEC nations buy U.S. grain at $7.00 a bushel.
Solution: Sell grain for $135.00 a bushel. Can't buy it. Tough. Eat your oil.
Quite!! Not just the US but other governments, ours included, allow themselves to be held to ransom by other nations as though they have ALL the power and our governments have none......
We may be fooled into thinking they are not being very bright when, in fact, its that cheeky 'lil political game again, ain't it??!!

brazil a country as huge as the EU or the sates is oil independant
but how a country as developed as the sates will take example from an undeveloped country as brazil with only 200 million people

Has to start from somewhere....
Particularly since oil reserves will dry up sooner or later anyway and unless develpoped countries like the US start applying alternative resources now, they WILL collapse....no two buts about it.
Dragging it's feet and grabbing as much as it can of the world's oil supply is not going to stop the US from grinding to a halt once the planet dires up it's oil.....unless we destroy it first of course with our civilisation.....
