Which do you prefer picnics or barbecues?

What is your favourite thing to eat on a picnic or chuck on a barbecue? Do you have any must-have foods? How do you keep your chocolate from melting under the summer sun? What do you drink in the summer?

And do you know of any good places to picnic / bbq we could share?

Who would you most like to picnic / barbecue with and why?

Hmmm... very tough questions... confused

Pro:s
- picnics can be taken anywhere, and you can always rustle up something to bring along
- bbqs make sure you get a hot meal, and are a lot of fun in their own way (not least by getting to watch the-man-of-the-house-who-would-never-step-closer-than-10-feet-away-from-the-kitchen-stove try to excel at cooking). grin

Con:s
- picnics have a tendency to attract creepy crawlies...
- bbqs have a tendency to get too hot and smoky...

I think it's a toss-up - they're both fun! laugh

What else.. favourite things to eat and drink on these occasions:
picnics: roast chicken, soft French cheeses, little cherry tomatoes, some tasty bread, some delicious rosé wine...
bbqs: burgers, spare ribs, chicken - with bbq sauce, of course!

One of the loveliest places I can think of for picnics (and bbqs, if you bring your own small portable one) is out on one of the little islands in the Stockholm archipelago in the summer - heaven! Hardly any people about, and sunshine, blue water everywhere, good company and good food! Otherwise, any beach is always very nice too - or a little glen in the woods, perhaps by a lake.

BOTH.

Each has their use. I usually picnic with my grandkids, which means anything chocolate /sweet to eat, and we bike to the Gnall, where I lie and read, and they play on the huge sandbank there abseiling down it and generally doing death-defying stunts. Or into the forest, with ropes and they do the same death-stunts off trees.

BBQ`s are for when we go boating on the Rhine - usually that entails just taking chicken and sausages, salads, rolls ... and lots and lots of ice cold beer in a cooler-box. Chocolate? Nah, we dont do the chocolate thing on serious boating bbqs.... I just take along some glucose type sweets for the kids.

I seem to be stuck with picnic-ing/bbq-ing with my mundane family... but sometimes a friend and I do our thing - along the banks of the Rhine - we just drive there and take a short walk to find a nice spot where we can dabble our feet, sip our wine, and chat.

The last one is the most comfortable, for me - I dont have to take bandages/plaster/sting medicines/check life-jackets are fastened/keep passing beers from the back of the boat/get smoke in my eyes or greasy hands/and I get to feel like a fully qualified adult with a life of my own!

cheers

Like both but haven't had a picnic in ages!!!

Used to have the first BBQ of the Summer every year in UK ... Open invite BUT everyone had to bring some booze and something to burn on the BBQ and I made loads of salads and cold veggie thingies like thaboulé, greek salad, pasta, spicy rice, ratatouille etc. + supply tray of cheese and a few cakes for dessert!!! Used to use a big barrel sawn in half for the BBQ... Was always great

Good thing about BIG (ish) event type BBQ's is that anyone can come, kids, parents, friends and everyone is happy!!! All the kids congregate together and leave parents stress free and there usually is a "controlling type" older child who takes it upon themselves to become "in charge of the kids" applause

Oh yes ... forgot about the home bbqs! We have those most of the summer ..... Our swiss neighbors are amazed at how often we "cook outdoors" !

We got a hug Firepit in the garden, and a Weber, and most sunny days will find either of those in use.

The Swiss seem to eat only sausages on a bbq .... We do ribs, spatchcock chicken, sometimes a roast in the weber, sometimes a South African style "Pooitjie" cooking in a big black cast iron pot - THAT is truly delicious .. oxtail, assorted fresh veges, lots of stock/wine, and lastly rice ... it simmers about 4 hours with the most delicious aroma! and makes a deletable feast!

The week-end bbqs (we call it a "braai") are usually crowded affairs with friends and their kids and swimming in the pool.

The law used to state, that only Meat in a Skin,i.e. Sausages could be grilled Outdoors for Public sale.
Any other Meats had to be done Indoors.
Don't know what the Law states today, but the Old one somehow became a Tradition.
