Phelps Celebration Plans Detailed
It will be a full afternoon and evening on October 4, to celebrate Michael Phelps.
Governor Martin O'Malley, Mayor Sheila Dixon and Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, joined Phelps' mother Debbie to announce the plans today.
The news conference was held at Towson high School, where Phelps is an alumnus.
Debbie Phelps told WBAL News that her son left the University of Michigan on June 25, and "has been living out of a suitcase since." She adds that Michael is grateful for the support he has received in Baltimore County.
The celebration starts at 3 p.m. with a "Parade of Gold" in Towson.
The parade starts at the intersections of York Road and Burke Avenue. It will proceed down York Road to Phelps' native Rodgers Forge.
The parade will also honor Katie Hoff, a swimmer from Towson who won three medals at the Beijing Olympics.
Phelps won a record eight gold medals.
After that the party shifts to Fort McHenry with a concert and fireworks display that will not only honor Phelps and , but also other Maryland Olympic athletes, including Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony, who was part of the gold medal winning men's basketball team.
