Heres the scoop.
about 3 months ago, a 26 year old male that lives just behind me ran from the Police as they were trying to pull him over yet again for driving drunk.
He finally stopped in front of his house, got out of the car and headed into the house, Police ordered him to stop.

The guy then started fighting with the cops when they approached him.
So they tazed .
He complied for a few seconds....... then started fighting again.
He got tazed again.
This time his heart stopped and the ambulance techs were unable to bring him back.

so heres my question.
Tazers were said to be NON-Lethal,
But hundreds if not thousands have died because of them.
Do you think tazers should be done away with and why?

I can see both sides of this, but mixed feelings.
I mean.. deadly sometimes yes, but if you just comply with Police.. you don't get tazed.

confused dunno

What is the alternative?... Shoot him? How many people are killed each year from drunk drivers?

It is sad when someone dies from their own actions, but what choice did the police have?

Here is something I found on the safety of them:

Taser International claims that Tasers are safe, but critics disagree, citing the number of deaths occurring after Taser use. Amnesty International has documented over 245 deaths that occurred after the use of Tasers. Amnesty International Canada and other civil liberties organizations have argued that a moratorium should be placed on Taser use until research can determine a way for them to be safely used.

A number of studies have investigated the potential dangers of Taser use. They have included examination of incident records, limited human testing, and experimental studies on pigs. Although tests on police and military volunteers have shown Tasers to function appropriately in a controlled environment, Amnesty International asserts that they "do not take into account real life use of Tasers by law enforcement agencies, such as repeated or prolonged shocks and the use of restraints".

uh oh wow sigh

I have seen just how nasty and mean some people can get when drunk or worse yet.. drugs.

or if facing jail or prison time.

the guy I mentioned was wasted and had a record of being dangerous.
I feel it was a good call in this case.

but any weapon can be misused.

But I do feel that tazers should ONLY be used in a life threatening situation.
and cops that use them for the wrong reason should be charged with attempted murder or at least assault.

I mean hell, if the guy it just fighting but has no weapon........I think the cops are free to use their clubs on him........ not risk killing a person.

I was thinking the same thing about the night sticks, but then again, is a job worth dieing for? Night sticks are deadly weapons too. This man was being violent and has a history of being violent. Cops are damned if they do and damned if they don't. The guy made it home safe, so should they have just let him go? If so, what happens if he drives drunk again and kills someone with their 4 children? Who gets the blame?

Maybe another option??
put timers on tazers............ so they can only be shot one time in an hour?

This way a person can only be tazed once,
Then if a person is stupid enough to get up and fight again... guns can be used in compliance with the rules.

It is such a tough call,
Someone is just dumb to fight Police.
On the other hand........ The police has no way of knowing if the person has mental health issues or health problems .

But back to what I said above,,,,,,,,,,,,
I don't think a tazer should be used except when the perp has a weapon.

I have watched many videos on it , they taser people and then order then to roll over on their belly and put hands behind their back, well they can't for a few min. cause what the shock does to their muscles temporarily, so then they aren't compyling with the police, so the police keep shocking them again and again. sigh

If a person has a deadly weapon and i am a cop, I am not going to pull out a pillow and try to disarm them... I am going to shoot to kill.

I don't beleive that any cop intends to kill someone with a tazer... if so, then why not just shoot them and be done with it. The penalty is the same for the cop if the perp is killed.

Have you seen the videos where the people comply after being tazed? I would like to think those tapes are out there, but funny you never see them.

I would not like to be a cop now days. It is a no win job. You are guilty just for being one. I thank god that there are those people that are willing to try to make a difference. What would the world be like without them? A police-free world where criminals can do as they please. It would be nice if we didn't need them, but that isn't the world we live in.

If the perp has a gun.. yes.. clearly the cops pull out guns...

However.. if the perp has a knife, club, tire iron or other less lethal weapon..........then the cops should use a taser first.
Tazers are used from a safe distance from a person.

the cop don't have to be in range or a weapon to use a tazer.

Better training and common sense should be used with any kind of weapon.conversing

Yes I have seen these video's as well.
I know tazers work, Is why I am undecided.

But maybe chill a bit.
you are saying here that all of the cops are going to quit their jobs and we will have no more police if tazers were banned????

The main point I was trying to make........... tazers are suppose to be NON lethal??

I disagree.... All the weapons you mention are deadly weapons. A peson can be killed if the perp deploys them just once.... if a person fails to comply less deadly force is needed.... if a weapon is involved... deadly force is needed.

That was part of my point here...............

Many people are getting tazed just for failure to comply...... even when no weapon is involved.
so what should be done to stop this from happening?

I guess beating them to death or shooting them is a better alternative.
