I still think the movie King Arthur (With Clive Owen and Keira Knightly) was the best representation of the current information they had gathered on him.

As many ways as there are authors, WR. And it makes a better tale. I do seem to recall that there is some doubt as to whether or not he really existed, and so his court can be set in any time-frame the author wishes. There is a span of time that the characters that made up the famed court were supposed to exist, but overall I believe that you're right, the old ways of Avalon would not be correctly juxtaposed with the time of the Crusaders...too many centuries in between.
Makes a great tale, though, when written by a good author. Mists of Avalon was a fantastic read, as was the entire series. Morgan Llewellen has also done well with the tale.
