It's called preventing accumulating recessive genes ...you could accumulate good genes as well but it's not worth the risk. Even stone age cultures have methods to prevent people too closely related mating. With Australian Aboriginies they assign "skin colour". An outsider coming into a community will be assigned a skin colour and even though they are obviously not related to anyone in the the community it tells those inside the community who their "relatives" are. It is very important. Native Americans have similar systems.

As far as I know my parents aren't related. But I know this couple (who has already passed by now) that married which were like 1st cousins. They had one child; what I heard was he was half/man and half/woman, I ain't jokin. He has to walk on crutches because his legs are messed up. He never could have any kids of his own. But he was real smart and went through college and taught school for years, probably 20 years or more that he taught in school.
Nope, my parent were not related, just married to one another. My father's brother married a distant cousin of my mother, so she is a aunt by marriage and distant cousin by blood.
