immanuelle: In the light of day, I go back to my original answer of 45. 45 birds in 45 trees should give you 2025 birds. Don't know what I was going on about in the wee hours of this morning...

guiriman: so 1 bird on 1 tree = 1

2 birds on 2 trees = 4

3 birds on 3 trees = 9

solve using formula:
b birds on t trees = n number of birds

where n is an integer between 2000 and 2100..
and b = t..

now, given b=t

and integer between 2000 and 2100 = square of b

let's say integer between 2000 and 2100 = range z

therefore b = square root range z...where b is obviously an integer

for simplicity dividing both sides by 10 gives

b/10 = 20 to 21 ..remembering b is an integer

now 4 power 2 = 16

and 5 pwr 2 = 25

so b/10 is between 4 and 5

and so b can be any number between 40 and 50

however b pwr 2 must be integer corresponding to range z.

since 44 <range z < 46

therefore b = 45

45 pwr 2 = 2025....(an integer within range z)

therefore...there are 45 birds on 45 trees..

but does the tree make a noise when it falls over if there is no one in the forest?...

sorry...this is nonsense...due to an overdose of brandy, i divide by 100 and not by 10 blushing

but the answer 45 still seems reasonable...dunno

45 birds on 45 trees = 2025 birds in total.

actually reducing LHR by pwr 1 reduces RHS by pwr 2 cos squaring..so the working is correct after all....

a new riddle for you folks...

A man has 2 friends ...one lives in Malta and one in Switzerland...

the man doesn't want to show any favour to one of these friends over the other. when he visits one or other of these friends he turns up at the airport at a random time. he then catches the first plane that leaves....either to Malta or Switzerland...

both planes leave every 10 hours from the same gate..

however, he soon discovers that he is visiting his friend in Malta 70% of the time...despite his own wishes...

the question is why does he go to Malta 7 times out of 10?

the planes leave every 10 hours...so every 10 hours a plane goes to Malta and every 10 hours a plane goes to Switzerland...what time do the planes leave?

Okay, got to be thinking that the planes for Malta are leaving during the normal waking hours of regular people? Like 9 to 9 p.m. and the Swiss departures some obscure hour like midnight onward???

no ...every ten hours ...which would mean they leave everyday 2 hours earlier than the day before..a bit strange maybe..but the planes to each place leave both day and night.. there are two planes to Malta and two to Switzerland everyday..

holy macaroni itsa eeasi..

first plane for malta leaves at time T

first plane for switzerland leaves time T+3 hours

second planes leave T + 10 hours (Malta) and (T+3) + 10 hours (Switzerland).

subsequent planes follow same pattern.

there is only a 3 in 10 chance of going to Switzerland compared to a 7 in 10 chance of going to Malta.

thats why he visits his friend in Malta more..not cos Malta is a warm mediterranean island full of hotty totty while switzerland is a freezing cold hilly pile of doggy poo...nobody wanna say that..

hava greata new year...cheers

Cheated a bit, got this from my teachers book of brain twisters...

A man woke up one morning to find that one of the wheels of his fully equipped car had a completely flat tire. Despite this he set off in his car and drove a 100 miles to visit a friend. He then drove a 100 miles home. He did not repair or inflate the flaat tire. How did he manage to make the journey?

so how about making a riddle out of a joke...where the listener needs to find the punchline?...a problem halved is a..laugh

okay, so i'll ask another...quite an old one... so it should be quite easy...not that i am calling you old, of course.. help

there was a man who worked in a high rise office block in the centre of London... every morning when he arrived at work he took the elevator to the 4th floor and then climbed the stairs to the 8th, where he worked..in the evening, he took the elevator down from the 8th to the ground as you would expect..

the man did this elevator to 4th floor, stairs to 8th every day, except on those days it was raining when he left his house, which, this being London, were frequent..on those days he took the elevator directly to the 8th floor...

the question is...why didn't he take the elevator directly to the 8th floor on days when it wasn't raining, but did when it was?...confused
