lancomegirl: The only bad thing I see happening is alot of people are going to take their L plates down, When I was a learner other users on the road took note of that and paid more attention, With no L's up I can see a few accidents happening.
My brother made the point that you can tell a learner driver - L plates or not :) I really must get on with taking driving lessons (I haven't even had a provisional license yet!)
Crystal29: Hiya Mini...sensible words...and I do agree that once a person gets to the age of around 75 then they should have to resit the test...theyre a menace and a danger on the roads too....
Well my Grandad is almost 96 and he was driving since he was 12 - honest he had over 78 years of driving under his belt and was a driving instructor over 60 years. He only gave up driving around his 90th birthday as he said he did not feel comfortable behind a wheel anymore with the type of drivers on the road these days. In order for him to get insured he had to get a cert from the doc every 12 months to say he was competent to drive otherwise no one would insure him. My sister just passed her test in the last couple of months and he taught her how to drive. He currently lives in a nursing home and the staff and their families and other residents families still ask him to take them out before they do their driving test. So I don't agree with saying people should stop driving at a certain age, but then not every older driver is like him he's an exception to all the rules is my gramps
I think everyone should have to do some sort of refresher course / test every ten years or they can't get their licence renewed, it would keep people on their toes and not become complacent behind the wheel.
Crystal29: I have never quite been able to understand why people who have not passed their driving tests are allowed to drive on their own without a fully qualified driver at their side....its seems crazy to allow someone who is not a competent driver to drive a very dangerous and fast piece of machinery without supervision and adequate road sense......I just wonder if this has something to do with the horrendous road accident statistics that Ireland have......
It certainly has a lot to do with it and yes it was crazy to allow learner drivers to drive on their own. A lot of accidents happen after midnight which I feel speaks for it self. Accidents do not happen by accident they are caused by inexperienced drivers or drivers who have been distracted or simply not paying attention.
We shall have to wait and see if this does make a difference to the carnage on our roads.

Well I hope it does...you seem to have a devastating loss of young life over there through road accidents......I think your drinking laws are being tightened up a bit so that should help too hopefully....
