Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try de-lousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

If you agree, pass it on.
If you can read this - Thank a teacher!

I think he the most brilliant businessman of our generation and he is in a large way responsible for most peoples ability to use a computer. Personally I dont use his products but his dream of a computer in every home in the western world has almost being realised, gotta take your hat of to anyone that can do that.

True, but if it was not for Mac, Linux, and the other various flavours of unix out there I don't think Microsoft would have expanded as rapidly at all.

Makes you think though after reading that, is it really fair to bring a kid into this world. Just look at rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it! Imagine telling a child that, it sounds so cruel and negative.

I wonder is it? or is telling a child that the world is a rosy place just winding them up for a fall?

But better they know that early than find out the hard way. I don't think we have to actually say it in that way. But we have to teach our kids that they cannot always have everything they want. Sometimes we have to say no to them.

If we spend all our time sayng yes and giving them everything they ask for then adulthood is going to be such a disappointment to them.

Part of parenting is teaching lessons. If we do it right they don't even realise they are learning hard lessons.. they just learn to adapt to life.

I see so many people with young kids that get themselves into huge debt cos the kids want the latest game or clothes or phone or whatever. They buy and buy and buy. If the kids throw a tantrum..the parents do what the kids want.

So when the child grows up and goes into the world they think they have a godgiven right to everything they want. They have no concept of working for something or saving for it or waiting their turn.

I understand what you're saying PT, but over the past few months, I've been reading up a lot on the power of positive thinking, and what I've learned is that if you have a positive attitude to life it makes a big difference. But as I said, I hear what you're saying! It's just that rule 1 from Bill Gates seemed a bit negative to me. But hey, he is the richest man on the planet isn't he. Well at least he was last time I checked !! So Respect to Bill !

I am not all that taken by Bill Gates, and riches does not impress me. He is quite something though. I tend to follow the life of Steve Jobs myself.

I do see exactly what you mean and the use of positive thinking is indeed very powerful.

But! the all important But! I have seen it used by marketing companies to brainwash their executives into total idiots not in touch with the real world at all.

A tool which can be used for good and evil?

I would think that being positive is essential to succeed, with a large dose of realism thrown in as well, I have not as yet seen a book which does both with success.

What book are you reading?

I'm not really big into books, but I've read a lot about the power of positive thinking on the net. Of course it's essential to have a dose of realism thrown in as well, I agree with you on that.

The net lately has become a good place to access books, at last!

It would seem that you have your head well screwed on, and are well able to use the energy that focused thinking can give you.

Thanks for that PT, I'm still working on it though, I haven't got the positive thinking mastered just yet. It can be difficult to be completely positive with everything going on at the moment, i.e. the economic downturn and the constant bad news being broadcast.

At least now I'm much more aware of how proper thinking can change my outlook on circumstances and events. We need to take control of our own thoughts and feelings instead of letting the media and others think for us.
