petalbabe: Simplistic view, perhaps. I dont know..
No hun a correct view in my mind. Thankfully the one thing in my favour when I was laid off is that I owe nobody a cent. If I dont have the cash for something then I cant afford it, simple as that.
It is very easy to blame the bank and so on, but this is a free nation, and if people cant afford to pay something back, they shouldnt buy it.
I dont have much, but I own everything I have, and am proud of it.
I, like you, own everything I have, dont owe a penny to anyone. There are too many out ther who want the latest TV, PC etc, cars under their bum even though they could walk to where they need. I see so many people driving a few yards just to drop their kids off if they got of their bums it would make a difference.
I call them the cornlake families..all gloss and no food for their kids to eat.
In saying that, look at all who travel north or their shopping, it was ridiculous trying to cross the border at Christmas time, it would take over 3 hours to go from Dundalk just to get to Newry, only 10 mile away..all for people going shopping there. Joke up here at that time was spot the southener...all the booze and bicuits
I think the recession may turn out to be worse than the 80s. I sincerely hope I'm wrong but every week there are more and more people unemployed. Nearly 1000 new unemployment claims were made in Wexford alone last week...that is only one office in only one week.
Even at the height of the 80s recession that many claims were not taken in any one office in a month let alone a week.

As I say I really really hope I'm proven wrong.
The day I went down to sign on I was told that they were closing the office the next day to try and catch up on new claims there were so many.

Most offices have had to do that lately, especially before Christmas. New claims coming in faster than they can be cleared. No extra staff, despite what the media says. Overtime cut to bare minimum and staff out sick (longterm like with cancer) not being replaced.
Staff working 12 and 13 hour days with no extra pay or any help or support of any kind.
What do the staff get? People telling them they should be sacked cos they don't work and they are a waste of money!!

That actually did happen Vonney. Well she didn't die in the office but close enough.
Staff member in Kilbarrack had heart attack at the counter day before Christmas Eve. She was lifted to the staff room and an ambulance called.
Another staff member wanted to go in the ambulance with her and stay with her til family arrived. But she was told no cos they were too busy. The woman died on Sunday.
Staff are not being given time to go to funeral cos of pressure of work.

I can well believe it, the Monday I went in was the staff members funeral but no one was allowed the time to go either.
petalbabe: I dont actually agree with it, but the country voted. Didnt they?
But it wasnt a democratic vote, the ballot paper gave a all the people that wanted to stand for election and you could choose who you wanted in order, it did not have a box marked
None of the above w*nker X
that box would have got my vote
so you see, the people who wanted to vote for no one on the list did not get their say, so not everyone was allowed to choose there representative, only people who wanted some of the above could voice their opinion.
Ok, you can spoil your vote but its not taken seriously.

i have a small business up here, its hurting me at the minute, iv not one phone call from the start of Jan, people are just not spending money, each morning listening to the news its all doom and gloom. some say its greed, some blame banks, government etc... the price of OIL had a hand to it as well, when it went up and over the $100 a barrel
to be honest we are all to blame in some way, last time i remember seeing long Q's at the dole office was way back in the late 80's its very depressing to see so many out of work now, so many under pressure to pay mortgages,i do feel for young families, trying to make ends meet.
UK not much better, the States are having a hard time too, so how knows what is ahead?
