Would you like to discuss something easier while we figure that one out...like the spin of subatomic particles in the Hadron collider?laugh

Joking aside lad but that question has puzzled some of the greatest Philosophers, Poets, Painters and writers since the beginning of time.

Chemicals?dunno

I speak for myself. I cannot define love that's why I asked. I used to believe it was something magical, when my heart would race every time I'd be with a girl or when I realised that everything would be alright because I could always rely on that person. However, of late it just doesn't make sense anymore. Love to me is a repetitive act. One that I've almost been forced into by watching eyes. the expectation and influence that's put on you to form a relationship in your later years is ridiculous. I often wonder if love is defined by a valentine card or a true emotion, and looking back on everything I've been through it just doesn't seem like I've ever genuinely in love or if anyone is genuinely in love. It just seems like a cycle rather than something that's instinctive.

Is that it? Would you be happy if love (this grand emotion) was simply to be content?

I do agree that there is a certain mentality that after mid twenties, you should be in a relationship. Not necessarily love, but there is that unspoken expectation.
The only way I know to describe it, is captivating. When it has you in its grip it can just as easily embrace you as throttle you, depending on the actions of your loved one.
I think that perhaps you are over analyzing or rather over simplifying things.
Maybe all things can be broken down to logic. Maybe there is no "ONE" out there.....

Still I'd like to believe in fate and even codger myself into believing that there is someone out there who can intrigue me in a good way, without the volatility as I've previously experienced.

I think there are many forms of love and that it is all subjective.... All I know is the type I long to experience is feeling that I am just enough for someone exactly the way I am.

Well life without it would seem cold, clinical and robotic.

It's unfortunate, those who ask the questions and allow love to elude them end up sad old men/women who usually write bestsellers when they've retired from their mundane jobs. Somebody has to do I suppose...

Yes..you can dissect love all you want, you can get any definitions...

Its what you make your life to be that is important.

You can decide that you want the hearts and flowers style love and set yourself up for disappointment when that feeling ebbs, or you can be realistic that this is how life is..the mundane everyday tasks which you have to deal with together, the sameness, the same thing, different day, that just the way normal life is..its a choice if you want to do it alone or with someone you care for.
Then it becomes that little something special.

I was in a roundabout way......i think it is a combination of chemicals (genetic matching) real trust, friendship. Compatible intellects and even still maybe something undefined. Maybe notdunno

yikes, that's something I never want to have, no offense (seriously, no offense). I just couldn't commit to something that became realistic or normal, i'd rather experience the mundane on my own.

good answer, and I'd definitely agree with your hormonal reasoning, sometimes your body has a way of throwing you off what's really happening, lust is a killer.

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of four through eight year olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

"Love is that first feeling you feel before all the bad stuff gets in the way."

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love."

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth."

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other."

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your french fries without making them give you any of theirs."

"Love is when someone hurts you. And you get so mad but you don’t yell at them because you know it would hurt their feelings."

"Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired."

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."

"Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate."

"When you tell someone something bad about yourself and you’re scared they won’t love you anymore. But then you get surprised because not only do they still love you, they love you even more."

"There are two kinds of love: Our love and God’s love. But God makes both kinds of them."

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday."

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well."

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn’t scared anymore."

"My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don’t see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night."

"Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of chicken."

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day."

"I let my big sister pick on me because my Mom says she only picks on me because she loves me. So I pick on my baby sister because I love her."

"Love cards like Valentine’s cards say stuff on them that we’d like to say ourselves, but we wouldn’t be caught dead saying."

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you"

"You really shouldn’t say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."

"God could have said magic words to make the nails fall off the cross, but He didn’t. That’s love
